Alright, I'm disappointed. I'll admit it. Now I'll go off on a rant. <OPINION> As far as the melodic qualities of each track go, I'm entirely unimpressed. There's not much to be said about that. It either seems to be not there, not enough, or nothing new. Minimalism at it's most boring. Personally, I like the ass-shaking Autechre. This new album is most definately devoid of ass-shaking beatage. the 'Beats that might sound cool if they weren't so horribly fucked' aren't doing it for me. The tracks that do have some kind of coherent rhythm sound like they were programmed by a 3 year old with brain damage. Also, the oh-so-unsubtle and ridiculous timing/tempo changes on some of the tracks, uhm ... not slick, jack. I'm both amused and disturbed by how close the fakes I made ended up sounding like the actual tracks. I thought to myself, "What would AE sound like if they crawled a bit too far up their own asses", and proceeded to make tracks in 5 minutes that could probably quite easily fit in on Confield. Scary. Perhaps AE decided to get a laugh out of releasing a terrible record and getting every idm jagoff to say that it's fresh. Sadly, I don't think that's the case. The next step in hip hop from the Nth dimension? Perhaps, but I'm not sure if it's a step in the right direction. My advice? I haven't heard chris clark or boulderdash, but Crunch? I'm listening to it now, and although I don't hate the album, how on earth can you, ugh, I mean this isn't anything Autechre couldn't have done around Chiastic, and even they didn't make such a simple cd, at least they went for more of an artistic slant. I've heard some of the tracks off of Confield, and personally I was hoping they would all be a bit more like Vis Scose, where each track doesn't pay off until half way through. I have to agree with you. I was looking for more melody and found it to be stimulating to my mind but it's not the same Autechre that I am used to. I am dissapointed as well. I mean, at least with songs like "Netlon Sentinel" from EP7 there was a nice melody towards the end of all the chaos that allowed you to appreciate that very element. I listened to the first few tracks this morning. I liked it, but it sounded like they were still doing 90MPH on their usual road of trading finesse, consistency and coherence for the wholly unprecedented... I wouldn't take this appraisal too seriously though, I normally listen to an album several times through earbuds before I form an opinion I stick with. If anyone's interested in having a go at forming their own opinion the album's shared by several of us on soulseek. yes, it's a trend i'm annoyed with. don't get me wrong i love noise (harsh even) and i Loved ep7 but this just has No funk left, just fucking random (sounding) noises. almost all melodie is gone. Well, I might sound shallow or something, but yeah, I wanna hear crazy new sounds. If I just wanna hear well written songs, which sometimes I do, I'll listen to Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Coltrane, Davis, Beatles, Beach Boys etc. The point is as far as well written songs go there is alot more stuff out there alot better than crunch, and while it may not use electronic sounds, if I want those I go to Autechre or whoever is up to crazy weird shit. Yeah, I'm starting to really like it. There's really only one totally non-melodic track, and it's actually pretty sick. The only track that leaves me stupified is the last one, where the song disintegrates into a barrage of beats for six minutes. One thing I really like, its the darkest Ae album they've released. Not cold, but EVIL. Got to love that. -mark

I have to add another vote that the new album sp4nks. It makes me think of Envane, for some reason. I'm just surprised at how stony and bassy tracks like "Sim Gishel" are. Definitely a slightly different emotional flavor from old Autechre. More ambiguous? If you still think Amber is their best album, you're probably going to find this their shittiest yet. Personally, I love the way they still have melody, but give it up within the song less easily. Their songs still all sound like the taste of copper to me, which never changes. I like the new Crush album as cute, well-written pop. MAS albums are like the Destiny's Child of IDM. It will be rinsed through my speakers often.
