What's happening here guys ? Remember funky ? danceable tracks ? Phonecia were seriously (at lease to me) one of the only funky/danceable 'idm' (die) artists left/around. i loved the 'Odd Jobs' singles and all other Phoenica i've heard including Soul Oddity. This new album entitled 'Brown Out' is, like the r.devine album (and tons others), just clicks, farts, bleeps etc... Really boring, soulless, unfunky! (imo, ofcourse) No BASSLINES!? , beats (remember DRUMS!?) funk to speak of. i find this really sad. I always thought idm was just that. intelligent, dance, music. This stuff that's called idm nowadays barely qualifies for 2 out of the 3 terms. Jesus christ people, enuff is enuff! Stop with this trendy BULLSHIT. Anyone else feel this way ?? (or is everyone else here blind, numb, hypnotized?) [`]] ps- I don't make music, so don't tell me 'if you don't like it..' and i'm not fishing, so don't bite.

I have to agree. I can't stand the term IDM, it's worse than the ghastly "electronica" and almost as bad as "Progressive <anything>". Things have definitely taken a turn towards the non-musical. While I'm happy for someone, somewhere to be pushing boundaries, it's boring gobshite if you ask me. The elitism of being into this crap can be quite tedious at times. Accessible does not mean bad: tell me that Massive Attack weren't groundbreaking in their day, and commerically successful?

I think you're being a bit narrow. Good music can be built without basslines and drums. This is another reason I don't like the term IDM: most of the music I listen to, which would probably be called IDM, is undancable.

And my email was not meant as a criticism of the list name. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an acceptable term. This could plague this area of music for years: Kraftwerk are still referred to as "Kraut Rock" fercrissakes. So here's a challenge folks: Come up with a better term than IDM and we can see if we can make it catch on! when will idm'ers stop making this post ? it's a testament to unformed face of the genre, a 'community' of people who are still looking for some kind of communal indentification. look, it's called 'idm', the name sucks, but it's too late to change it. i personally don't see anything about the counting crows that "rock". but alas they are rock music. too late to change that ! one thing is that several genres in electronic music were named after the venues they were popularized in : house (chicago's the warehouse), garage (new york's paradise garage), jungle (london's the jungle), etc. the funny thing, though is that idm, quite interestingly is simultaneously developping in at least five cities right now accross the world, although no idm weekly can seem to stay in business (RIP sf's static) : our only unified locale is the internet. so call it 'internet dork music'. 'it doesn't matter' ! the beauty of the term is that it's an acronym and you don't have to say what it stands for. will you let me be an ass an quote myself ? sorry. post called 'Re: [idm] IDM is not downtempo (a historical analysis)' from 12.19.2000 :

I like basslines or maybe just bass, recently I've been yearning for some serious old school idm bass. There is nothing like the time we went to blech and we walked into vinyl and autechre was playing, thump thump. That was an amazing feeling. I'm really into a lot of stuff lately but I do miss the bass. The new multicast lp has some good bass as well as a lot of the dub label stuff. Suggestions for good bass welcomed :-) oh yeah, and lets not get into that whole "idm is a bad term" thing again, that only leads to "women don't like idm" and then "who do you pronounce autechre (which, by the way is clearly stated in the ae interview at the end of the ae radio mix)". haha ____________________________________________ p l u m b d e s i g n Adesh Deosaran | Information Designer 157 chambers st ny ny 10007 p.212-285-8600 x240 f.212-285-8999 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the muscadine 'upanddown ep' from neferiu records is actually composed of a lot of bass experiments. possible to listen thru a subwoofer only and still get the same enjoyment. You can download it all for free too from www.neferiu.com or order it for $3 from the site. peace -----Original Message----- From: Adesh Deosaran [mailto:adeosaran@plumbdesign.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 8:56 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [idm] Brown Out is Poo Poo (basslines) I like basslines or maybe just bass, recently I've been yearning for some serious old school idm bass...
