anyway, you've got better ears than i do--i've never been able to discern
any difference between ATRAC and uncompressed PCM/WAV. i have heard,
though, that different recorders compress slightly differently. i'm not
stating that as a fact, but as hearsay. take it as you will....
btw, i use a Pioneer MJ-D508 deck for recording my vinyl, and a Sony MZ-R50
portable for recording from the optical out on my sound card.
