ah. i got it as well for *exactly* the same reason.
unfortunately i find that Atrac audio compression isn't
all that good for recording electronic music.
the way i put it is this:
you lose the highest of the high
and the lowest of the lows.
this means no sub-bass
and no high-pitched sounds.
i used to record all my dj sets onto MD and found
the fidelity sorely lacking.
It's definitely great for recording "found sounds" though.
I took it with me to Israel recently and it worked out great !
as an interesting side note RealPlayer 8 with Real Audio 8
uses the Atrac compression format.
