Michael (and everybody else, too):
I didn't chime in on this at first, but I wanted to put in a
recommendation for the Various Artists "no. 8, no. 8.5, no. 9" release
on Fat Cat.
"no. 8" is in my top ten all-time favorite pieces of electronic music.
Someone described it a "a pair of dusty old organs having tantric sex",
or something like that, and though that description's maybe a little off
(along with my mis-quote), the idea of drawn out tantric sex comes close
to the mark. It's one of the closest things I can think of to a purely
electronic version of Steve Reich's minimalist composition.
Thankfully, the CD of this, plus the remixes that followed, are
available on CD via Fat Cat. It contains the original 3 tracks from the
12", as well as remixes by Arovane, Pole, Autechre, and Funkstorung. I
rate the Autechre & Arovane mixes highest, but none of them come close
to the glory of the original "no. 8".
Cheers,
Bill
