i've been trying for years and it's very hard to find a nice compilation with that stuff on it. the "Junglist Massive" comp is probably the best one-stop way to get your mitts on a bunch at once. i've resigned myself to nth-generation mixtapes to hear all that stuff :( --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

While many have disagreed with me, I find the 'Jungle Tekno 5' CD from Jumpin & Pumpin to have several crucial tracks from that period. God knows where you could ever find that (and what happened to volumes 1 thru 4?) and just to keep it on topic here, there's a track by "Chaos & Julia Set" which is Tom and Mark from Global Communication. I will speak to my friendly neighborhood junglist, Moonrakker about doing an Old School mix CD. As it happens he played a set of lush tracks precisely in this vein saturday night, opening for Terrence Parker. And in my opinion, something really go lost in Drum & Bass when it got stripped down to 2 step. The whole concept of break deconstruction got thrown overboard in order to make it a real dance floor genre. If you're into the whole drill & bass thing, early jungle tracks are what inspired it. Though it's kind of a matter of, say, Muddy Waters VS Bonnie Raitt -- there's the original which was a world unto itself, and there's the after-the-fact people that come along and want to get in on something that's not a part of their culture. It's not to say that stuff like Squarepusher is exploitive or not valid on it's own terms, just that it's a reflection of and comment on the real deal. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i guess i'm about five years late with this one i have this compilation cd called "Junglist Massive" which contains about the only Jungle i have ever heard that really gets me excited... it's much more Dancehall/Ragga influenced than the post-Goldie Metalheadz garbage that saturated the jungle bins from about 1996 on. But anyway, i know that there has to be more stuff like the tracks on this comp. anyway i'm looking for recommendations for other pre 1996 jungle that share the raw dirty energy that these tracks have if you don't like jungle, please don't bother telling me that... i know it's stupid and the amen breakbeat is played out but goddammit i wanna hear some! thanks! josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hmmm. . .they had many comps. combined with the US "let's get a famous dj to remix tracks from our catalog" mix CDs and you've got probably 10-12 comps. i forgot to mention that a lot of older Suburban Bass singles that have been repressed. lots of good stuff there, but only singles. i'm still waiting for Remarc "RIP" remix to get repressed :) one of the nuttiest drum and bass tracks ever. the vocals are cut up more than the drums, and that's saying something! "ASHES TO ASHES, AND DUST TO DUST. NOW SOUNBWOY ALL I HAVE TO GIVE YOU IS A RING" oh yeah, i found some tracks on Scour that were from some Greensleeves comp. some of the tracks were rather dodgy, but some were really good. ymmv. -junglist and everyting then --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Look for some old Mickey Finn mixtapes, one of the best being the aptly titled "Ragga Jungle". He's got alot of classics, incredibly good and high energy all around. You'll do better with mixtapes than cd comps in terms of more underground track seletion and raw energy. DJ Jeffee from florida put out one of the better ragga tapes i've heard a couple years back, i know its available through pure acid mixtapes mail order. If you can only track down the cd comps, there's lots to choose from, about a dozen or so came out in the mid-90's. Some that you can probably still get: v/a - "Toasted" - Mutant sound system v/a - "Law of the Jungle - Moonshine Although if you check used cd shops and bins, there's alot of decent comps. I can get more specific if you're looking for particular stuff, but i don't have alot of time here, not to mention the off topic nature....:) -= cutups ----- Original Message ----- From: Josh Davison <yoshi@enteract.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.com> Sent: Monday, August 28, 2000 5:12 PM Subject: [idm] classic jungle

That's not the proper laugher. The proper laugher is "History of Our World Part One" mixed by DB which is a load of the pre-jungle 'ardcore tracks. One or two OK tracks and a lot that are as pleasant as chalk squeaking on a blackboard. Worth picking up used if you see it, though, just so you can actually hear "Mr. Kirk's Nightmare" by 4Hero -- one of those tracks that is famous but hard to find anymore. Though I think there was a '99 mix of that out on vinyl last year. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Maybe "Drum & Bass Selection 5" which has the awesome DJ SS remix of Cutty Ranks' "Limb By Limb". There's some other good stuff on the comp, but nothing tops that track. hey, now we're talking...off the top of my head these were some of my top ragga-jungle tunes from back in the day. Marvelous Cain 'Hitman' : easily my fav ragga jungle track of all time..."Get Mash Up"! Bad Man Wagon 'Do You Love Reggae Music' (Robs Records) Greensleeves released some good Barrington Levy jungle tracks, 'Under Mi Sensei' in particular Mad Professor 'Ultimate Experience in Dub' 12" on Ariwa has some great jungle mixes Kemet Crew 'Champion Jungle Sound' Undercover Agent 'Oh Gosh' & Pascal 'P Funk Era' (minimum ragga content, but great repeating ragga samples) X Project w/Rebel MC (I think?) 'Code Red' (Mango) DRS & Kenny Ken 'Everyman' Various '1 In The Jungle' There's a tune on Rugged that I used to play all the time which had the sample "we have to travel over hill & valley, just to find the good senei"...anyone know who did this? Yeah, if you think squarepusher invented madly chopped up breaks then you need to look at some early jungle. Some of that stuff is seriously fucked about with. Tommy did step it up another gear though, and added a lot more to the basic jungle ingredients. Gotta agree with this one, the Artcore series are the canine's gonads. Also the Jungle Mania 2 comp on Telstar is wicked, with classics like "Ganja Man", "Dred Bass", "Renegade Snares" and "Calling The People". Volume 3 is not quite as good (but it does have "The Lighter" and "RIP"), but I have no idea what volume 1 is like. G-love.
