the below suggestion was offered up by one imo smart dude on the Muslimgauze list as an alternate way to set up a "mailing list". I was wondering if there was any interest in this regarding the idm list. I think, considering idm's size of content, this would be a more effective way to communicate... of course this would take some work to set up. but any thoughts on this? -Thad

well... this seems like a good idea but i wouldn't use this method especially for a list of such a large size. Reading this mailing list does take up much of my time, yet I can usually read some of the messages while i'm checking the rest of my email and throw away the rest. This seems to me to be the most efficient method of recieving these messages, reading them, and throwing them away. On a forum it would take special interest and time to go and read the messages. I personaly would forget to do that and probably just wuite the list if it turned into an internet based forumm BTBTFFCRAB -----Original Message----- From: Thad [mailto:dahtbig@earthlink.net] Sent: Wednesday, June 07, 2000 8:38 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] an alternative way to organize the idm list? the below suggestion was offered up by one imo smart dude on the Muslimgauze list as an alternate way to set up a "mailing list". Hello, Eyal, Thad and other listmembers. There are ways to set up easily browsable WWW archives for a mailing list. Mailman (http://www.list.org) has this feature out of the box, and I remember seeing a solution for EZMLM that this list is currently run under (was it MHonArc?). BBoard environments are a bit different that Mailing lists - In many ways a BBoard is better since it's at a location and you can point people to sepecific posts - threads can be brought back up - people can search on them, etc. I'm currently developing a network of Electronic music sites - the parent site will be: http://www.ElectronicScene.com - but won't be live for a few months... But - the BBoard is up and rolling - everyone is welcome and it currently is moderated. --------------->> http://www.ElectronicBBoard.com I could setup a separate forum for the IDM list if people stated they would in fact use it. I usually organize the topics by subject, which pretty much accomplishes the same thing. That way I can delete "threads" that I have no interest in. :: e v a n k. s t o n e :: w e b p r o g r a m m i n g e n g i n e e r :: m u l t i m e d i a l i v e :: p e t a l u m a, c a, u s a ------------------------------ :: mailto:evan@mmlive.com :: http://www.mmlive.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think we should have the threads sorted by how interesting they are.. That way we get Lancebot-tech, IDM label releases, informative reviews & insightful musings at the top, followed by Reuterz press releaseses, then the bulk of posts, follwed by the spam, then at the bottom you'd get posts by me and Kelley tossin out ideas, plantin seeds ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-4202 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

For those who didn't know - there's a lot of mail-readers with a lot of powerful features out there... just don't settle for a puny hogmail/yahoo/etc account, it just won't cut it... get POP3 access and be a happy camper... :)

You mean like http://idm.atonal.org/ ? Anyhow - I'm very much against the idea of making the IDM list web-based, as I find the way I'm able to handle mailing lists with my mail program (even though it's Netscape Messenger) much more convenient than web-based solutions... these also have the problem of not being very useful if you prefer offline reading (i.e. if you're not on a flat-rate internet connection)... I would have no problem with an NNTP (read: news) server being set up for the IDM list - this would even provide a good archive at the same time and could be combined with a web interface and an email-based system, which'd pretty much get the best of everything in one go - but who'd do that? -- Kurt B Pruenner Haendelstrasse 17 4020 Linz/AUSTRIA http://www.mp3.com/Leak np: Plastikman - Consume (Consumed) WARP Records http://www.warprecords.com/ BUZZ 1&2 http://www.buzz2.com/ User Friendly http://www.userfriendly.org/ Segfault http://www.segfault.org/ Anime On DVD http://www.animeondvd.com/ Slashdot http://www.slashdot.org/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
