hey spacekittys... ok, i think this should make sense... --when i bought Quique by Seefeel, it had a quote on the cover from a review that said that Quique mixed the sounds of MBV and Aphex Twin... --the quote was like "a sublime blend of the two sounds" or something to that effect... --and anyone who has the seefeel cd or has heard it knows that this is a pretty good description of the sound of the Quique cd... --so now, the professor has found a bridge between IDM (aphex) and MBV....the seefeel sound... --and i will CONTINUE to discuss guitar stuff on the idm list as that's part of what i'm doing in my project with Dr. Fluff... --mixing guitar with IDM...and don't tell me not to mix guitar with ambient...the guy who "invented" ambient is a guitarist... --so, you can go complain to the better business bureau if you don't like it... --i doubt richard d. james or the autechre fellows ever went around asking everyone if the stuff they were doing was "ok with everyone" --i believe that's what it means to be a true artist... Thanks...Prof. V

Well...In terms of the influences matrix, I'd say they qualify as proto-IDM. The whole early 4AD thing has obvious textural influences on IDM. Plus the Cocteau Twins are great, and you should listen to them without regard to Genre. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think he was talking about Brian Eno...who is, indeed, credited with inventing the term 'ambient' to describe what ambient music is today...(and has been for the past 25 years or so) As far as the link with MBV and IDM (because everyone has to say soemthing, right), I'd say this...those of us who have been listening to IDM since the beginning listened to stuff like MBV before...when there was no IDM. When we were all stuck in the world of rock 'n' roll, big hair bands and the craziness of acid house (which just seemed 'too hippy' for many of us), My Bloody Valentine was doing things with sound that we liked. I might even daresay that many of us who've been around long enough to remember when AI 1 and 2 hit the stores were also fans of stuff like early Orb and KLF, though clearly these aren't IDM, either. In many ways, IDM isn't about the sound (because, honestly, where the hell does Squarepusher's drill'n'bass fit into it?) but the attitude and the approach to sounds. For newcomers, that may be confusing because there doesn't seem to be a connection between Brian Eno or My Bloody Valentine or the Orb and Bola or BoC, but that's because you're newcomers. Those of us who have been searching for this stuff for 15 years first found MBV or Eno or the KLF. THAT is the connection. Disclaimer: For those newcomers reading this, please don't take offense. I don't mean any judgment by this term, but only as a way of drawing a distinction between those of us who remember anticipating Autechre's first full-length and those of us who were doing something else at the time. There are many reasons for being a newcomer...not all of them bad...we were all there sometime, anyway. my four cents ---brian C Twomey wrote:

also about these pre-Idm files. 4ad released some wonderfull 12"'s from Jah Wobble. That's the guy with the wonderfull basslines in some of The Orb's best moments. Even Modern english used remixed b-sides... Ultra vivid Scene did some pre triphop stuff also on b-sides :) -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: Kent williams <kent@avalon.net> Aan: C Twomey <newpower@interlog.com> CC: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Datum: donderdag 11 november 1999 23:51 Onderwerp: Re: (idm) mbv - my bloody valentine>>Seefeel is the bridge
