I've recently come to the conclusion that software synths are completely useless. They hold no value, whatsoever. The only way to make groundbreaking music is to shun new technology. That's why it's 1100$ for a 303. And The same for 808's and 909's. And the same for juno 106's. It's all hype. Software synths have so much more flexibility for the price. And if analog is the only thing you'll listen to, then you're stuck in the past. Hardly ground breaking. OK, I'll bite... I sold my OB Xpander analog synth for a Nord Lead 2 rack, but I kept my Korg Mono/Poly, and would love to get a Jupiter someday, maybe a prophet or moog weather it's the knobs or the sound or some spiritual force, these old synths are unique and un-imitatable. But I have no interest in using a soft synth, simply because I like twiddling actual knobs instead of rythmically mousing a virtual knob around on the screen. Any soft synth algorithims can eventually be ported to an embedded hardware architecture, and the nord modular has made a good stab at doing this. Eventually they will get it right and I will buy one. Actually, though, i find the best music I have made to be driven by simplicity, and that's why I may never get a nord 3 or modular, cause sometimes, that extra LFO or filter, or AI morph zone time slicer, just ruins it. In my humble opinion

very good arguments either way...soft vs hardware. i find, in my studio at least...a combination of digital, be it sampler, softsynth or analog emulation...analog, synths or filterbanks, effects etc...is the best combination. what software has going for it is cost, it is much much cheaper to get software than hardware, most of the time you can get it for free. in a live situation hardware wins hands down, it is much more flexible to use hardware live vs software. just my thoughts, greg ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? yeah, i think just about everyone considers themselves open minded...but not everyone is? so you do the math...people are open minded to what they want to be...alot of the time though i think people like to argue on the list and post negative things because if you don't chances are your posts will just get ignored...so at the end of the day it just about getting attention. on the other hand it is nice sometimes to observe ongoing debate/threads between ppl with different ideas, it just more than not degenerates into name calling. oh well, such is life... i do IDM/DSP more on the experimental side of things...live and studio, if you'd like check out my http://mp3.com/twine page... what kinds of stuff do you do, and artists/labels you are into? there are so many out there it is hard to keep up, my friends lance m and john c keep me up to date somewhat. greg ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I like just about everything.. But the last song I did (just finished) is a kind of distorted haujobb sounding thing. With a nice little "idm-ish" (haha) end to it. All on the computer of course. Well, a friend of mine recorded his jp-8000 for me, and just sent me some of his random playing over the internet, but I filtered it through some LP/HP filters... The one before that was a... well... uh... Hard to explain. One person who heard it said it had a "sad machine" quality to it. If you want a copy (or anyone else), lemme know, and I'll send a copy. (tried mp3 but it ain't workin). As far as labels go.. Well, I'm so broke, I can't buy too much music these days. It's either buy CD's or buy equipment, or pay for school. Naturally, I've been buying equipment. But, I like anything that sounds different. My main love would be IIM (intelligent industrial music, hehe), because I think that many people have decided that it's impossible to write groundbreaking music that is aggressive and distorted. Too much music to find, too little money, too little time. I guess I like Numb, Haujobb, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Converter, David Garza, depeche mode, bach, blah blah.. you get the idea.
