A valid question to ask is, which Orb? The lineup has changed continually since inception, and I don't even know what the current lineup is, though I understand that Paterson has done "kiss and make up" with Youth, with whom he parted fairly acrimoniously even before the first album was released. Having said that, I have a lot more lingering affection for the Orb in its various incarnations that for some of the more "holy" icons mentioned on this site. Wim Vogel wrote:

i'm maybe in the minority here but I love the orb most with strong thomas felhmann presence. really liked the stuff on kompakt and the one with Lee Perry. totally a different vibe then the classic stuff of course. i think he's a pretty solid part of the touring act these days. last time i saw them they played together and each did a little solo set (with fehlmann doing the smooth dubby house stuff and patterson jamming a bunch of classic rave tracks together). pretty fun On Mon, Apr 13, 2015 at 9:47 PM, Richard Hester <gwrenchxx@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

You won't catch me dirting on Fehlmann - he lends an approachable, "gemutlich" touch to just about everything he does. I've been a follower of his since his Palais Schamberg days , and that was a long, long time ago. Chris Taylor wrote:

I meant to send this to the list. I like Thomas Fehlmann, but I like Chris Weston more.Patterson seems like the type that dabbles in everything but lets the others dothe actual work, and this sometimes shows in their albums. Weston has a temper, sure, he is an angry man, but sometimes, this type of personality createsbetter art. This is true in painting (Pollack), music composition (Mozart) and everyother type of creative medium. Weston is still putting out some great stuff, even though heis economically crippled now, and he would argue that it is everyone else'sfault except his, but if he would just hold back the outrage, just a little, inthe effort to keep the peace, perhaps people would work with him a bit longer. --- Sent from my Robot Monkey Drum Machine ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: AV2k <a_void2000@yahoo.com> To: Clint Anderson <clinta@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, April 13, 2015 9:22 PM Subject: Re: orb [reluctantly raises hand] Yep. From what i’ve seen it seems to be impossible for Chris. His crowdfunding project for his album didn’t really go too well, the money went somewhere but there’s very little results besides more ranting.

i think patterson is sort of the guide that has kept the orb 'brand' sounding the same or at least similar enough. you can argue about how much he does or doesn't do, but only the orb sounds like the orb, and alex patterson is only in the orb, and the only one consistently in it, at that, so he must do SOMETHING intangible. he's like flava flav is to public enemy maybe? i'm kidding but he clearly has steered the thing through 25 years of ups and downs. that said i really enjoy westons contributions and i'm just not going to say anything about him one way or another for fear i'll get an angry email ;) i actually really enjoy The Dream too, too bad they only managed to do one album with that lineup. same for living in a giant candle winking at god, great stuff if only they could have done another one. as for fehlmann, yeah i had heard alot of his solo stuff as just 'thomas fehlmann' quite awhile before he became a regular orb collaborator, i wouldn't ever have expected him to be the piece that alex replaced weston with, as the two are so completely different sounding, but his tiny loops and textures and sound beds really work in the new lineup. i saw them last year in minneapolis, fehlmann and patterson, and it was a great show. clearly just tweaked versions of some of their tracks with some special one-off discs on the cdj for patterson, nothing too fancy, and fehlmann had his macbook synced up and was adding beats and samples and whatnot. a really simple performance, where its probably really easy to transport all the gear, i imagine it must be 1000 times easier than their old mega-setups they toted around. Fehlmann was chums w/Paterson from his early days as A&R man (Paterson) for Editions EG. His shadowy contributions to the Orb's heritage start way back at U.F. Orb (check the credits). They were just more overt on the Kompakt tracks. For the record, I like the Orb's output from day one. On another note, I'll be presenting another aspect of Detroit/Berlin/English/Jamaican collaboration next month with a 3-part radio special on KFJC re. Moritz Von Oswald and his entanglements - he also figures in here, though on a different tangent. Clint Anderson wrote:

Yes, totally Orb minded here as well. Clint, you put the words right: with LX as a constant member, contributers largely influence the outcome of particular tracks. I like this idea: you will know what to expect from them, but then again anything could happen as well! Great dub sounds with Lee Perry or the Screen album (with Gaudi and Chester), minimal techno (Thomas Fehlmann), full-sample loaded heavy bass-lined tracks with Youth et cetera, great aural explorations with Kris Weston, Steve Hillage and so forth. The only output that I’m not too keen on is HFB, too jazzy for my ears. But hey: you can’t please them all… There is supposed to be a new album on Kompakt later this year, I’m still waiting for the DVD’s on the accompanying ‘Adventures Beyond Dark Matter’ release on Abbey Road and there is speaking of a 3rd History Of The Future (focused on the releases with Andy Hughes). I can understand why you don’t get into Cydonia, somehow it’s not a coherent album, but it has some great tracks on it (A Mile Long Lump Of Lard, Terminus!). If you can get the 1999 first versions recordings, you’ll find some great versions as well! Screen is a side project of LX with Chester and Gaudi, highly dub influenced as you might expect. HFB stands for High Frequency Bandwidth, another side project of LX with Dom Beken. One physical albums, a few digital ones as well as digital singles. Do you know Transit Kings? Another side project with Guy Pratt and even Jimi Cauty playing along on a few tracks. ‘Living In A Giant Candle Winking At God’ is worth a listen too (although it suffers the same jazziness as HFB from time to time, but it certainly has its great moments).
