The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (TIP!) What a wonderrful selection with musical perspective....the song about vegetables and wind makes me cry.. but Good Vibrations is Santa Monica in July. For me, music always takes me back to when it was - where it was and who I was/wasn't with when I heard it. Once I was so taken with a Silent Poets track I replayed it so many times, I wrote 40 pages of poetry... When I do yoga, I hear Harold Budd/Brian Eno "The Pearl" in my head, even tho there is no sound in the room. When I hear "In The Still Of The Night" I think of the very first time a boy ever asked me to dance and held me close. Whenever I hear "White Rabbit" I flash back to an amyl trip @ 14..... &"Whole Lotta Love" just makes me shake my long hair & do the hippie dance. Whenever I hear Marvin Gaye sing "What's Goin' On" I get thefonky ghetto blues... As for N.O.W., Aphex, Orb - too many memories mushrooms, stonedness, clouds surround my head... In 1988, around midnite I was in a record shop in San Fran where I regularly routed for tunes and I found "Strings of Life" second track in on the Bside - My hair stood on end, my spine tingled... And I'll never forget the reaktion the Beasties "Fight For Your Right To Party" or Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" raised whenever I dropped them in the early hours of djing.... I dunno, it's difficult to express exactly how I was feeling at the time, but it was kind of frustrated...I couldn't get my mind to focus properly. What I needed was some SOUL." i think i know this feeling. But i have always attributed it to the difficulty of the music. I find things like AFX and the like to be a challenging listen (at least parts of it), which you can't just grasp the whole meaning of by drifting away into the soft melodies and whimsical lyrics. even if its some good guitar rock, it still holds that structure, its not challenging your ears and internal audio processors the same way idm does. but its for the same reasons that i'm growing to love so much idm as much as i do, but at the same time i'm understanding how much i can't let go of everything else...if only for my sanity. k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
