I agree, Kat. When I first introduced my girlfriend (who is now just as hardcore/orgasmic about idm as I am) to "the music", I just threw some of the craziest mu-Ziq and aphex tracks at her and instead of "This is shite!", I got "This is awsome!" As a matter of fact, one of her fav albums is Chaos AD's "Buzz Cancer" which, as you may know, is one big noise-fest. Oh, and with regards to women not getting excited about finding rare releases, whenever my girlfriend finds one you'd think someone just stuck their hand down her pants. Women can be just as hardcore about our machine music, it's just that they are few and far between. -Andrew S -- Propecia: Are you taking enough? http://www.calvin.edu/~asmith89/

This is kinda silly. I know plenty of women who enjoy IDM music, they're just not as hardcore about it. Whereas guys may get all hot and bothered when they see a rare mask record or get all sweaty when they get ahold of some new white label, girls tend to only buy something if they really dig it. (Although there's nothing more attractive in a girl than a good musical collection.) As for going out to events, I think girls tend to view it more as a social event, where we tend to go for specific acts. So when the crowd largely consists of head bobbing sweaty freaks staring intently at some guys laptop, there isn't much to offer in the way of socializing. Although largely due to the location, we had a pretty good ratio of women to men at both Sterile events. With the artists perched up on a loft, people had no choice but to dance or socialize. If you want the women around you to get into IDM, try playing it for them. Don't play them the most fucked up gescom record you can find, ease them in with something with melody. I haven't met a girl yet that didn't react favorably to Boards Of Canada or Lexaunculpt for this very reason. -Daniel daniel@peachfuzz.net ============================================================================== Peach Space Disco For Fish Tacos PO Box 1902 8-10pm Wednesdays, KUCI 88.9fm Huntington Beach, CA 92647 www.peachfuzz.net/space www.peachfuzz.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sterile: Orange County's Intelligent Electronic Monthly www.peachfuzz.net/sterile ============================================================================== "A lot of people just talk out of their ass, I happen to fall under that category" -Dana Watanabe

I tried this once... While driving in a car with a girl I decided to put on the BoC album and see if I could get her to like it. She thought it was 'okay' but she would rather have 'something she could sing along to'. So, I skipped the disc to Aquarius and sang along with the woman counting the numbers. She wasn't impressed... In my experience, I have never met a woman who was into IDM. Could quite possibly have something to do with where I am living at the moment... Hess -/\= Hess M. Mind you, now I'm going out with a woman who's really into Kreidler, Microstoria, some Compost stuff, etc. It's almost as if they're like guys, you know, some of them like some music, and others don't. ;-) Michael np. well after seeing this thread I am really looking forward to these threads (after all they usually occur around the same time): what is idm? house sucks vinyl vs cd. bootlegging for fun and profit (ok I admit, I am fond of that one) a satirical post that proves some people have to much time on their hands is that fascination with monkeys healthy? idm content (sorta): picked up the following: john McEntire (sp?)/ sea and the cake seven inch. The McEntire track is exclusive to the 7 inch and the sea and the cake is from the soundtrack McEntire did (Reach the Rock). The McEntire track is a little dark, full of shimmering bass and interesting beats. Reminds me of a more mature fridge actually. The sea and the cake track is what the cure should sound like in 1999. also got the matmos/piano magic split 7 inch. The matmos track is completely nuts. More in line with quasi objects than the west. Damn good if you like that kinda thing (and I do). Also, when did lesser join matmos? he is listed as being a member. also got to hear a promo of the forthcoming pan sonic cd. Very good. Minimal and sparse. Not as in your face as the previous release. More like a mike vanio release but less minimal. -daniel

I would agree with most of what is being said about women not being as inthralled by idm as men. But I think in Detroit it is a little different. I have met quite a lot of super cool girls who know what to give props to and what sucks, and a few know a hell of lot more than i do. On the norm though, I would have to agree - most women would rather listen to moby while exercising than sit down, pack a chalace, and spend three hours in an innebriated meditation. As for Aphex Twin, most people, whether it be girls, football players, parents, granmothers, kids - they are all immediately offended by his music and then when they see him they just think the world is coming to an end. Well, as Kid 606 put it, "electronic music is the sound of a bleek tomorrow." -- ..chesterblaze signing off.. €-€-€-€-€-€-€-€-€-€-€-€ ...stay linked... I don't know why either, but... when i went to go see aphex twin here in chicago there were two girls in front of me who apparently came only to see Sneaker Pimps. they left with disgusted looks on their faces as soon as they heard 10 seconds of his first song. I didn't see too many other women there either. if i ever find a girl who likes aphex twin or just idm in general as much as i do i think i'll marry her scott.
