When I first signed up for this list a couple of weeks ago, I *thought* I listened to IDM, and a lot of it. I figured I'd be able to contriubte to some list discussions. However, message after message I see references to artists I have never heard of. And, well, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed! :) I feel the need for a IDM CD shopping spree, but I can't get *everything* talked about on the list, and wouldn't know where to start. So....I was wondering, if you had to pick, say 5 IDM CD's that you would recommend to someone who...ummmm just got into IDM....what would you suggest? Thanks! ooooh, I love questions like this. My top 5 recommendations would be: hab - maPod boards of canada - music has a right to children autechre - amber and/or tri repetae skampler - skam compilation on silent records black dog - spanners This is a good mixture of new and old school idm, and pretty much all of these discs are easy to find in the USA. Of course, I'm omitting a huge array of other artists and genres. Others I would recommend include Aphex Twin, mu-ziq, Plaid, Luke Vibert, Funki Porcini, Amon Tobin, Funkstorung, Jeswa, Atom Heart, tetsu Inoue, and a million others... I'm actually in the process of doing this very thing. Since I don't know what you have, I'll tell you what I am reccomending to my friend, who is a *true* newbie (Sorry Jim, but you are. :) ) : Autechre : Amber Aphex Twin : Selected Ambient Works II WARP : Artificial Intelligence I WARP : Artificial Intelligence II Speedy J : Public Energy #1 Plastikman : Consumed Seefeel : Quique These were based on what were mostly my introduction to IDM, and things which I enjoy most thouroughly. I can't guess as to whether these are all things you already have, or not. I consider them all to be excellent albums, and they are all widely available. I would also keep in mind when reading this list that a HUGE amount of the stuff discussed is not easily obtained, and not very common. This doesn't mean it's not excellent music - it just means that a limited number of people will have heard it, and it must be sought out. Good luck. :) On Tue, 7 Jul 1998, Keith Reinert wrote:

Dear Agony Auntie: I've been enjoying candyfloss all these years. Now someone's told me about Triple X Mints. Although I haven't actually tried them yet myself, I'm confused by the abundance of brands and varieties available out there. You make valid points, however, I remember when I was trying (struggling) to get into idm about 3 years ago, I discovered the IDM top 10 of 1994 list, and proceeded to buy nearly everything on it, and I was disappointed with none of them. I'm glad I did, because that introduced me to Ae, Aphex, Black Dog, and a whole host of others. Everyone's favorites lists are highly personal and subjective, etc, but for those of us who don't know where to start, it's really helpful to get some suggestions from the seasoned listeners out there. :) At 1:07 PM +0200 7/8/98, Irene McC wrote:

Without reading all the other replies (and thus running the risk of repeating someone else), I'd go for: 1) 808 State "90" (ZTT) 2) Various "Artificial Intelligence 2" (Warp) 3) Black Dog "Spanners" (Warp) 4) Aphex Twin "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" (R&S) 5) Autechre "Amber" (Warp) If you asked me the same question this time last week, I could just as well have said: 1) Boards of Canada "Music Has the Right to Children" (Warp) 2) Plaid "Not For Threes" (Warp) 3) Future Sound of London "Accelerator" (Jumpin' & Pumpin') 4) CJ Bolland "Electric Highway" (R&S) 5) Sun Electric "Present" (R&S) /\/)ark http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

this is my first post to idm - keith, you should be proud of being able to draw me out of the corner. :) i've been on the list for a few months now and i definately could have used a question such as this to help me along. i'll offer 5 suggestions for idm that have made me very happy: 1 autechre: chiastic slide - the best album i've ever heard, the album i'd be trapped on a desert island with, the most complete and well thought out cd i've ever had the priveledge of hearing. i like it bunches. dark, intelligent, layered rhythms with the most stunning & jaw-dropping melodies. virtually all autechre & gescom is brilliant. 2 third eye foundation: semtex - sounds like the end of the world. starts w/ probably the best d'n'b track i've heard and ends in a ambient-feedback soup. 3 boards of canada: music has the right to children - reminds me of memories that i've never had. crunchy hip-hop beats and melodies second only to autechre in brilliance and mood. 4 porter ricks: biokinetics - the only basic channel/chain reaction cd i own, but i really should buy more. dark gurgly fuzzy noisey w/ housey beats. 5 scorn: ellipsis - the best remix disc i've heard. scorn remixed by scorn, bill laswell, coil, autechre, scanner, meat beat manifesto & others. good introduction to a bunch of talented folks. most compilations annoy me once i've found the songs that are worthwhile but i can listen to this one all the way through. it might also help that all of the musicians are great. each of these are on the darker side of idm, which is the side i gravitate towards. perhaps someone else could suggest something a bit lighter... also, these discs are all relatively old, but they've really stood the test of time for me. hope you enjoy. ethan

Sandoz? Not IDM? I beg your pardon:) Very much IDM IMHO. Not the best Sandoz release though. Keith to add to your list I would go for Sandoz's 'Intensely Radioactive'. Also Richard H. Kirk's last 2 full length records under his own name: Virtual State and Number of Magic. Enjoy! NATE

If this isn't IDM then where is the line? It sure isn't straight-ahead dancefloor techo, or dub, or much less industrial dance. Just curious, not confrontational. As long as I'm at it, though...if you're looking for melodies with your intelligent beats and abstractions, check out Cabaret Voltaire's _Plasticity_. I doubt you'd go far wrong with _The Conversation_ either, or Richard H. Kirk's _Virtual State_. The other Sandoz records are pretty impressive as well. Other suggestions, some of which may fall outside a strict definition of IDM: VSVN (Atom Heart) -- hard to find release on his own Rather Interesting label, but worth the search. A couple other choices, two of which will be equally hard to find: BASS, Silver Sound 60, Senor Coconut. Jeff Mills, Purpose Maker and AXIS compilations -- highly experimental Detroit-style techno for the dancefloor. Coil, _Stolen and Contaminated Songs_ -- includes the magically polymetric "Nasa Arab". Many more of course. --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 "The electricity is no better off than on."

I see you specify "today's"... but don't you think it is wise to let the records resonate and sort of establish their value for the long haul, before you begin to call them classic? 5 years is not that long. The best art is as alive today as it ever was -- maybe even moreso -- even if the age shows. When you listen to a record for a few years, and it keeps getting better every time you hear it, then it might be safe to say you've got a classic. If it has lost its value in just a few years then maybe you've just got an interesting period piece. Any thoughts on this? --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 "The electricity is no better off than on."

bjork... i thought her latest was actually more groundbreaking than a lot of standard idm stuff lately. orchestras and electronics colliding, bouncing off each other and fusing with passionate songwriting. a great listen.

no, the electronics don't fit u2 well as a *focal* point. but u2 have always been about adapting a new sound to their 'feel', and i think on 'pop' they were reaching for it and didn't quite get it. actually, they did get it much earlier, on 'zooropa', everyone's least favorite u2 record since they dabbled in beats and loops way before it was the new hip thing.

i give bowie enormous props simply for having fans among the kids, keeping himself healthy and seemingly happy, and trying to keep pushing his music unlike other surviving members of his generation. he and eno are class acts, and while 'earthling' wasn't the most innovative record last year, it certainly rates as a good bowie record. sorta-idm thought: what i really like about boards of canada, bits of autechre, and the x-ecutioners: they all use the occasional vocal sample that 's so processed and cut up that you'll never figure out what it's actually saying. i think it's one of the stranger elements of old school hip hop that never gets any attention: the little vocal samples that are so far back in the mix, or so messed up by the producing or cutting, that they cease to be words. heck, sometimes they're the best hook in the song. anyway. rob

Out of my lurking posture and onto the *unpopular* list. One thing that gets a bit hard to take on the IDM list is the often unfounded slagging "certain" artists take here. It was simply amazing that the mention of Orbital in the last week or so didn't bring out the napalm like it usually does. I have to side with Mark here. While being *my* age doesn't provide any inherent savvy or ability to pick 'em, it means I've seen and heard a bit. Bowie has his weak points, but people like him (and Hutter and Schneider, for that matter) have done some fine stuff - and, imo, still do a passable job. I would go so far as to say that not only is there nothing wrong with Underworld or Orbital, but that they are both (imo, again) relevant and doing things - in a good way - that a lot of the latest buzzers are not. NONE of this to speak ill of the new, the different, the groundbreaking, etc. I buy it all, but see little sense in the frequent trashing of UW, Orbital and the like. It's not that I fail to see any logic in (SOME of) the points made, either. All music isn't meant to do the same things. It would be nice if a little less elitism (note: this is a general criticism, not meant for this thread in particular) were involved in the whole scene, n'est-ce pas? Quite a lot really, but then, after a lot of effort I've decided Bytes does nothing for me. Same with Spanners, although that and _Temple of.." have their moments. Somehow I think I just don't get it and believe me, I've tried. I find BDP "pleasant", but not as amazing as everyone else seems too. I must commend you for suggesting this album. Singlehandedly, this disc caused me to buy everything on the pork label, and much of anything else that sounds like them. Incidentally, I just picked up the latest Bullitnuts, and I think it is their best yet. It is deep and mellow like their last two outings, but not as plodding. I recommend it. Oh, and the Akotcha full length as well. take care ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jonathan Logan Work: 415 543-2800 UI Droog Home: 415 487-0424 CriticalPath, Inc. Absolutely, AI 1 is listed in the original IDM FAQ from a few years ago as the defining recording for IDM and what it means, that is fine with me.

I suggest 1 or 2 over 3 or 4 any day.

I s'pose so, eh.

While I don't care for this stuff much, yeah, this is the ultimate comp of quality stuff from this time, etc.

hmm, was this ever on vinyl? I forget to look for cd's, so I never noticed this comp series

Egad, yes; second to AI, imho.

Here I agree with the "earthrise.ntone", and would suggest the Ninja "DJ Food" jazz breaks and remix LPs, as they really represent Ninja in a good light. DJ Tools, too. These aren't comps, true, but they have enough ninja hands in them that they practically are comps by who is on them. solenoid@europa.com <------+

To my knowledge, "Tour de France" was only realesed on a German comp. called "DJ's Best" and it is long oop. jeff -- dancing/about/architechture "...with wandering steps and slow..." ICQ904008

Zenon has a very good suggestion here - start with excellent compilations and use them to figure out who & what you like. Before I found IDM (the maillist), I had to rely on comps to point me to new artists. Back in '92 there were some really shitty comps, too (in all fairness, there still are; I've just gotten better at avoiding them). Nowadays I've pretty much can read about something & tell whether I'll like it or not, but that takes practice. I'd recommend buying more Ninja comps (or the earlier domestic Shadow comps of Ninja tracks), but that's just me. :) Che At 09:59 AM 7/10/98 -0400, Zenon M. Feszczak wrote:
