Its a form of Beat heavy electro/house music heavily laden with pornographic lyrics and samples. My simple mind understands analogies so the way Ive figured it is: "AphexTwin" is "IDM" as "2liveCrew" is to "Booty-house" The bits ive managed to hear had a definite Florida-electro feel with Miami Bass mixed in. The important thing in this subgenre are relentless beats to keep the anatomy you are describing moving as long as possible :) Im told that half of the appeal is the effect the explicit lyrics have on the *close* physical contact folx have on the dancefloor, so security is pretty beefy to quelch the invevitable fights. Not my cup of tea but some of the locals are really into it. ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17 Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircaft Systems Fort Worth, Texas

yes, and ironically... it seems to be popular in the commercial side of things here.. well, not booty house.. i'm not sure if it can be called that.. but lords of acid frequenctly have pornographic lyrics in their tracks.. especially the EP (LP?) called Pussy which I've heard.. which has a girl's legs spreadeagled with a cat's face in between as a cover-art.. quite stupid imo, but.. heh when listening to it it sure resembles bootyhouse :D __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

Actually it would be more like as DJ Milton is to Booty-house and 2 Live Crew is to Miami Bass. And to further this discussion of what most folks here would definitely not consider intelligent, but what most definitely is Dance Music, you can include Electro Bass(booty) ala DJ Assault and Baltimore Breaks(booty) ala DJ Technics. And the two things that all varities of booty have in common is that (a) there are usually explicit lyrics about anatomy/sex, weed/alcohol, and/or negelected haircare, and (b) the tracks sound much better on a boomin' system. Oh, and it helps whitey feel a little more ghetto. What does any of this have to do with IDM? Well, I'd bet you'd find a couple of those records in the crates of some of the artists discussed on this list. Remember, an educated consumer is the best customer. -Christina

Question of the day: What is "BOOTY"? When we were in Detroit for the Kraftwerk show, my friends and I saw a section in the techno/dance room at Record Time labelled "BOOTY", and I've now seen it mentioned on a couple of rave flyers. Later that night, we were a little drunk and driving around the city (well, the driver wasn't drunk, but the rest of us were) and we flipped on some clubmix radio show, and they were playing some crazy-ass fast-as-fuck dance stuff that really kicked, and it didn't seem to be any of the styles we're familiar with (house, speed garage, trance, whatever), so we're thinkin' maybe it was BOOTY. "Yo man, gotta get me some o' that MOTOR CITY BOOTY!!" was our slogan for the rest of the drunken rage that the evening became. And speaking of booty - I got some cool swag from Warp yesterday, in the form of a couple of promo posters for WAP100. They're a sort of lime green colour, with "wap100%indiefuckindependent" written across the top and images of a few dozen of their singles. I was thinking of bringing one in to hang in my new office at work, but I don't think the "f" word will go over well. Greg "BOOTY" Clow

Being from that area of Michigan, and having on numerous occassions scene the infomaous New Dance Show, I'd say you were probably hearing some hybrid type Miami Bass/Electro stuff. I would take Booty to mean electro type aggressive 808 breaks with explicit sexual samples or vocals over the top. The lesser intelligent side of Detroit Techno, but fun as hell when in the right mood:) peace Nate On Fri, 26 Jun 1998, Greg Clow wrote:

It's the next big thing after jungle. Or maybe after speed house. It refers to that dirty ghetto-ish house music. You know the stuff.... "Work that dick! Work that dick dick!" etc. it lends itself to Luke Skywalker albumns of old.

booty is a term that is applied to a genre when lots of sexually explicit vocals or samples are dropped over very club friendly techno, house and electro. you were probably listening to a form of booty house/electro on the detroit radio. i've heard that's a popular style of music in d at the moment. some booty-type artists include. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

Finally...we're talking about Booty! There is some pretty good stuff out there, like DJ Magic Mike's "Foundations of Bass" (compilation of early-'90s material), similar to Ultramagnetic MC's and other early sampled hip-hop). It's not IDM by any means, but if you're into old-school rap and IDM, it's worth checking out. And don't forget about the Beasties' Grand Royal magazine feature on bass; it's pretty hilarious and has just the right balance of seriousness and tongue-in-cheek booty humor. Speaking of, I've been mildly impressed with a couple of tracks from the whole No Limit posse (Master P., Silkk the Shocker, C-Murder, along with about two dozen other rapper/producers who appear on <each> track). Don't go out and buy the albums, but there's a track or two worth hearing on Master P.'s "Ghetto D" and Silkk's "Charge It 2 Da Game" that would make a very good compilation. It's really bass-influenced, but just like a lot of bass music, there's some interesting rhythms that come close to drum'n'bass, and a really clean production style rooted in electro. Other Southern rappers doing good stuff: Outkast, Goodie Mob, Witchdoctor... .John. NP: Bob Marley - Natty Dread

well, speaking of booty, in the words of dj assault "ass'n'titties".. (i dunno it for certain but something liek this:) "All you girls with those big booties, get up and shake your big booty, and if you got a little booty, well you can go up and shake that too!" or something. that is such bullshit--i thought we covered that two weeks ago. one music is not "more intelligent" than another--that idea in itself is pretty unintelligent. the spice girls and rozalla are "different" than what i listen to--not better or worse. there is a lot wrong with being pretentious. when you feel you are better than others, you close yourself off from the enrichment of learning from other people and benefiting from their experiences and insight. one of my best friends amazes me with how insightful and intelligent he is. he loves rozalla. SO? music--imo--is about a transfer of emotion that is not dependent upon the latest groundbreaking sound, or ingenious programming trick. emotion does not know the boundaries that we have placed around what we classify as "intelligent." i am glad that i got back on this list after two years, because it put me back in touch with my friends at obliq--great comp, by the way--but until someone emails me to tell me that they took the ****ng "i" out of idm, i am out of here. unintelligently yours, craigj <<unsubscribe>>

not really.. something like bootyhouse, is only meant to get some asses moving on the dance floor... at least a lot of producers who make a lot of different type of music played at "raves" feel this way.. "well yeah, it's not like it's anything musically good, but 1000 kids jumping up and down on acid aren't gonna care." I've heard the same thing said about certain other types of the music played at "raves".. and therefore it's unintelligent. (i think) at least that's one of the ways I see it, but I think saying something is not that intelligent is like saying it's not that close to being IDM.. __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron
