I would recommend everything Riley did from the early 60s (documented on Organ Of Corti's recent reissues, the most recent of which is _Music For The Gift_, a very strange collection of cool jazz, tape-splicing experimentation and deconstructed R&B that sounds very contemporary in a Stock, Hausen & Walkman way) to 1980's _Shri Camel_ and another early-80s album called _Moonhsine Dervishes_ (I may have left a word out of this title). After _In C_ you may want to try _Poppy Nogood And All-Night Flight_ on Organ Of Corti and _A Rainbow In Curved Air_. From there, go to the double-CD _Persian Surgery Dervishes_, which is available as an expensive European import but is definitely worth it if you're a serious Riley head. A devastating, psychedelic-jazz version of _In C_ can be found on Organ Of Corti's 1999 issue of _Reeds Streams_. Essentially, you should start saving your money for about 6-8 Riley discs. I highly suggest tracking down these two Terry Riley LPs as well: 1. Lifespan 2. Happy Ending/Les Yeux Fermes Both were French soundtracks and resemble Popul Vuh at their best, and that is only scratching the surface. A lot more melodic and less drone/minimal than most of the work he is best known for. HE/Les Yeux was also produced by Igor Wakhevitch who also put some incredible LP's which are now available on CD. I'm not sure if these two Riley soundtracks have been reissued on CD. David *+* On Mon, 20 Mar 2000 12:16:28 -0400, Dave Segal wrote:

he's great, but, no I can't think of another piece by him that's quite like that one. But I would definately check out the "Rainbow in Curved Air" album. Very euphoric, surprisingly synthetic sounding for a tape loop-based piece using electronic organ and acoustic instruments, a perennial fave of mine. "Shri Camel" is very nice, a set of pieces in an orientalist/stoner vein, played on a specially tuned organ. His later stuff tends to be more about longer melodies, often bearing the influence of his study of Indian classical singing. If you get into string quartets, check out the Cadenzas on the Night Plain album. While there are a lot of repeating phrases, the pieces have less of a minimal groove feel and more of the feel of melodic/contrapuntal classical music. I like 'em. (the quartets on Salome's Last Dance seem less compelling to my ear). if what you're really after is stuff that sounds like "In C", Steve Reich's '70's ensemble stuff like "Music for 18 Musicians" might do it for ya. kurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Uh, just so the consumers know what they're getting into, it's like a big bunch of college kids doing a really smelly out-jazz/rock improv before breaking into a good spirited, if shambly, account of "In C". Oh yeah, and their tape ran out before they finished. Riley didn't have anything to do with this performance. anyway, it IS fun once it gets going; kinda reminds me of the extended version of the Stone's "Sing the Song All Together". but it fits the "junior bonger" category. kurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
