Yeah, but it wasn't called IDM back then, SO THERE! ;) Seriously, though, which releases from that bygone era (pre-little-fluffy-clouds) would you recommend most? I don't think there's been a discussion like this on the list for a while, so I'm starting one up again. Audience participation is strongly encouraged. Just try to place an emphasis on stuff I can actually FIND nowadays without having to take out a loan. You can respond privately if you want, but I imagine there are a lot of other people out there who would love to have been into the scene back then, only they had not yet reached the age of reason. So, for them, please post to the list. Do it for the children.

Electric Cafe - Kraftwerk (also, the Tour de France 12"...impossible to get, sorry) Eno is a given. Technodon - YMO ...a title I seldom see discussed here and while a 1993 release and not easy to find, I find completely BRILLIANT. More along the lines of your query would be the earlier YMO releases. LOTS of the Bill Nelson stuff...from late Be-Bop Deluxe to Red Noise to his volumes of solo work. Tin Drum- Japan Geez...that whole NY electro scene with Afrika Bambaata, John Robie and a cast of thousands ("One More Shot" !) ....I'm having difficulty with just how far back I'm supposed to go here...or just what parameters to set up as I wander through the backroads of my (considerably aged) memory. I'm restraining myself from mentioning things I consider seminal like James Brown or Ein. Neubauten and all of the early industrial stuff 'cuz I don't hink that's what you want. I think I'll wait for this to develop if ( it does) before I start to ramble. I was working in music retail in the late 70s-early 80s, so I can bore you all to death with this kind of crap. jeff -- dancing/about/architecture "...with wandering steps and slow..." ICQ 904008

Also, Tangerine Dream is probably an essential pre-IDM prototype band that was around in the Kraftwerk days. -- Mr. Tangent "insert random quoted text here, for your reading pleasure"

since no one mentioned these yet: emanuel gotsching: e2-e4... let me just put it this way: it will blow you away. minimal idm, something like orbital vs lego feet... one long track which constantly changes and evolves... beautiful. (from 1981) klaus schulze: black dance... fucking great. this is trance from the 70s w/ spacey melodies on top... also way ahead of its time... there is another klaus schulze track called 'totem', which is brilliant (very autechre like pulsating/changing beats) but i don't know the album which it originaly appears on... i hear its on the silver collection...? anyone have info on this...? edgar froese: aqua... no beats on this one... but it's amazing... kicks the shit out of aphex as far as 'sonic invention' is concrened... weird oscillating synths, which sometimes fall into 'organic' rhythyms meshed with occasional melodies... great trip music.. ;-) (from 1972) peace.... :spacecake:

No no, go on... the tangents are always more interesting. Coming from an an industrial background, I can see influences/similarities/differences, but I don't think I would have ever imagined seing Einsturzende Neubauten and James Brown in the same sentance. Excuse my naivety but I'd like to hear what the connections with idm and James Brown are. -- sheila.santos discreet.logic tel:514.954.7307 10.duke.street fax:514.393.0110 montreal.quebec.canada http://www.undergrad.math.uwaterloo.ca/~smsantos H3C.2L7

"...industrial rhythms all around" - Kraftwerk (Electric Cafe lp) with banging-pipe percussion sounds, who site James Brown as one of their few top influences. IDM (by definition of the middle letter of the acronym,) is just abstract deviations from dance music. The abstraction of traditional dance music is basically what James Brown's bands slowly did between their blues/r&b/gospel beginnings and their soundtrack-like mid-70's lps (JB's/LC era stuff). I think that Kraftwerk picked up on James Brown's thing about hammering down the tight groove and really locking it down stable for a long time. He used to fine his band members $5 for their deviations from the groove, but everyone wanted to play for him, so, even when they'd come out owing him money, they'd stay in the band...discipline. Bootsy started via the JB's, in fact. Also, remember there is one JB track ("monorail"..?) in which he shout-outs stuff about keeping the groove tight 'like a machine' or something. I guess "Sex Machine" is kinda like this too... BTW, I'm citing the first JB biography and a JB film archivist/historian who I'd talked to 5 years ago (can't remember his name now, maybe his archives are on video now) (see live JB footage if you get the chance!!). I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cluster yet. Their material is a huge influence on bands like Oval, Mouse on Mars, and other bands of that ilk. Check out their collaborations with Brian Eno, and most of their older records from the seventies. Strange chattering rhythms combined with off the wall melodies. Their records are quite available. -DTC

if you like these then you will love Steve Hillage's "Rainbow Dome Music" (still in print via Caroline). nothing but arpeggiating synths and some gliss guitar lines for 40 minutes. "back side of the moon" by the orb (with hillage!) is basically r.d.m. with a drum beat added. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.

Listening to Aphex, Black Dog, B12, Kirk Digiorgio, and others, it's obvious that they all listened to and were inspired by the early Detroit stuff. Return to the source! A buddy said he just picked up a Network rehash comp. which collects a lot of early Detroit classics, 4 CDs for $15! I don't have the cat.no. or details yet, but I'm going looking for it at lunch tomorrow. Oddly enough, I just found a CD copy of Retro Techno (Network comp. circa 91 or 92) in the used bins. Makes me wonder if the person who sold this treasure didn't pick up the 4CD comp. Retro Techno and Biorhythms 1 & 2 might be obsolete (but I wouldn't bet on it). Also worth picking up are the new Derrick May Innovator comp. (www.transmat.com), and if you don't have it already, Model 500 Classics (R&S), and the recent Carl Craig Psyche comp.. Going further back, the Cybotron Clear album is still available from Fantasy, though if you can find it, I'd recommend the German Cybotron comp. put out a few years ago, which included that much sampled track, Techno City. Just don't confuse them w/ the drum&bass idiots now calling themselves Cybotron. Listening to Cybotron & M500 makes the connection between Kraftwerk, Electro, and Detroit Techno very clear. Is there a good Underground Resistance or Kevin Saunderson comp available? UR's early stuff is more aggressive and in your face than any industrial or heavy metal I've heard, anger focused in a good way. Check it out if you can. More on the Network comp. when I get my hands on it. It's interesting that you should be looking backwards right now. Me & some buds were having an "Easy Listening Session" the other night, and after listening to the derivative stuff on Skampler were lamenting how Techno seems to be running out of steam, and while the energy has shifted to D&B, there seem to be fewer artists w/ the talent to innovate (Amon Tobin, Squarepusher, TPower, Photek, 4Hero, SHJ) than there were in Techno from about 92-95. So, we've been going back and learning to reappreciate some of the old stuff, mostly early Detroit. Any other oldtimers share this sentiment? Che

I saw an ad for the Network 4CD (in Muzik, I think) and was initially excited but then I saw the tracklist. It might not have been complete but the bulk of the tracks were more along the lines of Altern 8 than Rhythim Is Rhythim, if you catch my drift.

Absolutely essential, if you don't have it either get it or unsubscribe from IDM. :)

This would be much better if it had more original versions and fewer '94 remixes. (Especially "No UFOs"!)

The first Depth Charge comp on Submerge has quite a bit of UR and is excellent. I didn't think volume 2 was as good, and I haven't heard volume 3. There's a Kevin Saunderson 2CD out on Planet E that looks to be very complete that I keep meaning to buy. Also: X-103 'Atlantis' is the bomb. The Drexciya 2CD on Submerge is great. well id hardly call myself an old timer, but i do still listen to a lot of old detroit, Mills Hood UR Transmat etc etc It makes stuff like Skam and seem so bland and soul-less... unfortunately warps recent output also seems to be pretty 'safe' or 'marketable'. Steve
