I've got this bad habit of not listening to everything I get (I know, I know I'm a spoiled music critic) and then later I will discover that I've got something pretty cool in my collection. So I finally played this 12" I got from Harthouse called "Drums In A Grip" by Frank De Wulf (It's also on the Dark Hearts 2 compilation)...what I like about it is that it's about the right tempo to mix in with most house-oriented records, but it's far from being house...aggressive drum beats and unusual patterns, but with that underlying four-on-the-floor. It's very interesting. This is the only thing I've heard from Frank De Wulf. Does anyone know how it matches up with his other stuff? ____ Hug Your Waistline to the Bassline Tamara Palmer trance@netcom.com Women Respond to Bass

No, but his remix of Model 500's "The Flow" sucks hard in comparison to the Jedi Knights remix; but most anything sucks in comparison to that song. Anyone wanna send me a copy of that single? My roomate has one, but I want it in the worst way. Sorry for changing the subject so much, alright- the Frank De Wolf remix of Jam and Spoon's "Stella" sucks too. Case closed. Send me free Urb's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks. Frank De Wulf's B-Sides Vol.1 was one of the most influential records in my early days. And that stems from 8 fuzzy minutes on a SCR pirate radio tape. I never found the vinyl (but have Vol's 2 & 3 - not as good). His most famous track is probably "The Tape" which most will recognise. g.

Wow, haven't heard FDW's name in a while. I used to have some stuff by him on vinyl ages ago but sold it when I moved. From what I remember, most of it was hard, (dare I say intelligent?) semi-ravey thumpy techno--sort of Joey Beltram meets early European techno. I really liked it at the time. I believe most of it was on R&S. Sorry I couldn't help more! Would be very interested in learning what he's been up to from others, though. Ashok

Check R&S and Music Man labels for his name. There are 4 or so volumes of the "B-Sides" which was his project for the nascent Belgian techno scene. Think "Ravesignal" for most of that stuff, but his newer stuff gets harder (though I suppose in the preHoover days of 91, the smoothish Belgian sound was the hardest thing besides acid) as evidenced by this listing at Resonance: G/T 12" Bypass Zero Return Bonzai $9.99 Frank DeWulf cranking out a pretty good techno number from the Bonzai label breaking with strong mental gabber-like effects and twisted basslines!!! eric

That sounds quite like the Frank De Wulf I have heard since (87-88ish). He put out loads of records on Music Man in the late 80's and typified the "New Beat" and neo-acid sound of that era. A lot of his records were megamixes of then-current acid and new beat tracks; a few seconds of this, a few seconds of that. Although he fell off (imho, of course) in the early 90's, he did do a mildly interesting remake of some YMO tracks a few years back... butter, sashainboston

He used to do a lot of NEW BEAT techno in the late eighties, he went under a lot of names. One of his most popular New Beat hits was RHYTHM DEVICE - ACID ROCK. He made a couple of other new beat records. His B-sides series were kind of popular. He has done a lot of remixes. I think he had a track on IN ORDER TO DANCE VOL.5 (R & S), but I'm not a 100% positive of that. +**********************+ | Bill Samuels | | wls@U.Arizona.EDU | +**********************+

Yes there is a track on IOTD v5 but I don't have the track listing handy. Also the one really cool Frank de Wulf remix I've come across is of _Blue Room_ by the Orb. This is something... Geez, all these people using chemicals to remove sticker goo... I take the paper part off first and rub off whatever I can with my finger. Then there's usually just a little bit left which I get off by rubbing with a blankie back and forth really quickly. The goo gets warm, smears, then comes off. This works great on CD cases and works on other surfaces too if I'm careful. The all natural way! Yeah! For IDM content, does Frank de Wulf have any EPs or other works out there? I've gotten my hands on a few of his remixes (Orb, Ishii, Model 500) and really like what I've heard... np: Prisoner soundtrack, for what it's worth

Yeh, I've picked up a strange little item in a second hand shop a while ago titled "Missing Links" (Vol 1 - suggesting there may be follow ups) on HPF Records - cat. no HPF919 - which features 12 tracks from a variety of contributors, but mainly Frank de Wulf, or projects he's had a hand in : Beyond the B-Sides being one, Chestnut another, even a remix of The Orb's 'The Blue Room' done by him (which does NOT improve on the original, IMO). Total running time of CD : 73'42". Happy to trade you this, should you be interested. I * "Incomplete without surface noise" - Autechre
