Jim O'Rourke worked for several years with Illusion of Safety and made some
pretty intense music focusing on the field recording/digital processing side
of things, so I think he's still pretty relevant. He's also recorded
electroacoustic noise material with Gunter Muller and created several
minimal ambient albums of his own, not to mention remixing artists such as
Merzbow and Autechre. I was surprised to hear of his connections to the
post-rock indie scene a few years ago when I had only associated his name
with extreme experimentalism until then.
About as IDM as Fennesz or any Mego artist, IMO, and therefore still
relevant.
