Even with the slew of rehashed and generic beat oriented releases that have surfaced from Mr Laswell, I still hold respect for the man for his seminal work during the eighties. Yet... I can't get around anyone (especially him) reworking the seventies recordings of Miles Davis!!! Those records are perfect - what does he think he can possibly do to improve them!?! Those bands that Davis led during the "Live Evil" , "Dark Magus", "Get Up With It"... periods recorded some of the rawest, dirtiest, and groundbreaking records of all time! The last thing I want to hear is Laswell's ONLY bassline and a Sly & Robbie breakbeat backing the Davis' playing! Those recordings were rooted in funk! - there is nothing funky about Bill Laswell!!! discreetly, l.b.

Here's something I got on the John Zorn mailing list that gives a hint as to what it'll sound like.... cya brian -------------------------------------------------- Miles Davis: _Panthalassa - The Music of Miles Davis 1969-1974_. I was originally told that this would be an "ambient dub" remix, but it isn't. Instead, it is remixed in the original spirit with an emphasis on some of the spacier and funkier aspects, and some ambient stuff linking together different sections. Mixes are very clean with the rhythm tracks more forward. This is in spirit close to last year's Pharoah Sanders' CD. Release scheduled for sometime later this year on Sony. Track Listing: 1) In a Silent Way: sections of "In a Silent Way" and "Shhh/Peaceful" from _In a Silent Way_ 2) On the Corner: "Black Satin" from _On the Corner_ followed by two unreleased jams from the same recording session 3) Rated X: "Rated X" and "Billy Preston" from _Get Up With It_ 4) He Loved Him Madly: From _Get Up With It_ Jeff Spirer Axiom/Material www.hyperreal.org/axiom/ ---------------------------------------------------------------
