Even with the slew of rehashed and generic beat oriented releases that
have surfaced from Mr Laswell, I still hold respect for the man for his
seminal work during the eighties.
Yet... I can't get around anyone (especially him) reworking the
seventies recordings of Miles Davis!!! Those records are perfect - what does
he think he can possibly do to improve them!?! Those bands that Davis led
during the "Live Evil" , "Dark Magus", "Get Up With It"... periods recorded
some of the rawest, dirtiest, and groundbreaking records of all time! The
last thing I want to hear is Laswell's ONLY bassline and a Sly & Robbie
breakbeat backing the Davis' playing!
Those recordings were rooted in funk! - there is nothing funky about
Bill Laswell!!!
discreetly,
