just bought a very interesting hip hop album called Latyrx and it's on solesides (shadow's label). the music goes far from the trends of modern hip hop, mixing old skool -type basslines with effects and sounds that are more associated with electronic music. lyrics (performed wonderfully with extreme emceeing skills by lyrics born & lateef) contain no typical rap cliches or gangsterisms and are mostly interesting and adventurous, but in some tracks, like "the muzapper's mix.." all the singing goes a bit over the edge of decent, at least in my opinion. if you are interested in experimental vocal hip hop, i suggest you have a spin of this wonderful record containing positive vibes seldom seen in the world of modern hip hop. tracks a 1. latyrx 2. say that 3. the quickening (the wreckoning, part II) b 4. balcony beach 5. live at 90.3 '94 featuring john tchicai and free association 6. the muzapper's mix: aim for the flickering fame/rankin' #1 c 7. funky granules 8. bad news 9. off (with) their heads (be prompt) 10. interlude d 11. burnt pride 12. scratchapella 13. the wreckoning (live 45 mix) 14. burning hot cali on a saturday night all this might be old news, since the record is not really new, but i haven't seen a mention about it in idm and i thought there might be some people interested. np: the black dog - cycle bomb the suburbs Sire One Coupe Devil Graphics

You guys need to check out DJ Food - Refried Food. It's got something for almost everyone on this list. All kinds of styles but sorry, no drill 'n bass. The TJ mix is real nice drum 'n bass, though. And you should here Æ use old material (crazy man). np: Kraftwelt - Deranged in Space. The single with more variance than a box set of Chemical Brothers. <fontfamily><param>Fixedsys</param><smaller> _ / \ /\ /__/ \ / \ \ / \AVIS \\\\ emailing from work. <underline><color><param>0000,0000,ffff</param>ravis1@mindspring.com </color></underline> <underline><color><param>0000,0000,fefe</param>http://www.mindspring.com/~ravis1/</color></underline></smaller></fontfamily>

That might have been Return of the DJ 2. Anyway, I'll use this as a chance to recommend Deep Concentration (Om) again. It has a Latyrx track, plus X-men, Cut Chemist, Prince Paul, Peanut Butter Wolf, etc. (I'll post a tracklisting if anyone cares). Best part about it is the way it mixes up styles. It's a dj compilation, not a scratching or even hiphop comp. There's some acid jazz, some spacey abstract stuff, a DJ Shadowesque track, a couple scratching tracks, and there isn't a bad one in there. I've heard that it's a lot more "musical" than the RotDJ comps. Plus you get an enhanced CD with a cheesy beatbox, which is alright, sorta fun. Sam
