Hi, I have recently gotten access to a CD writer and I've been thinking about putting some of my vinyl onto CD. Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to sample the music off the vinyl onto my computer. I only have an SB16 card would this be adequate for the job ? thanks brendan

My suggestion is to first make sure you have plenty of memory. But before you start recording, see if you can EQ it through a mixer or even a Direct Box to take out the noise. Or you can do this after you copy it onto your hard disk using a good wave editor with plenty of filters and such. Cool Edit is OK but you really should get a Mac instead... ~~~~~~~~~~~~trapezoidamoeba~~~~~~~~~ giv@purescript.com.au~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~http://www1.loom.net.au/home/autumn

There's a PC program called Dart Pro Audio (I think that's the name) that is made for taking noise off of LP's to transfer them to CDR. Try and track this down. T.

Chris Sez: 1) Defrag your hard drive first. Recording a lot of data requires quick access to the HD and if it has to skip around it will put skips in the recording. 2) Run from the Line In on the SB16 directly to the Record Player. Don't use the stereo in the chain. Actually, I've done it thru the stereo/amp too, so try it both ways. Note: You would be much better off with a better sound card. The new SB64 is cheap these days and is supposed to sound nice (it has no built-in amp, so it has no noise) 3) Get a decent recorder program like Sound Forge which lets you adjust the levels before you start recording. Set to cd-quality sound. 4) Record the whole song in one shot as a big WAV file. Listen to it to make sure there are no skips. You may want to record each song separately (instead of the whole side of a record) to keep file sizes manageable. 5) Some CD-R software requires that the file be saved as a RAW file. If so, you will need to set some "little endian/big endian" crap. Check the help file. If the burner software allows you to use WAV files, then you're all set. 6) Hey kid rock and roll, rock on! -Chris Fahey

Win 95 included defragger is not a good option, it consolidates free space more than truly defragging the system. Norton Utilities offers customizability (it's a word because I say so). A separate hard drive partition or hard drive helps as well.

Let's just say it has less noise. But if you spent the money on the CD-R, you shouldn't hold back on the sound card.

A good card will have record levels for the inputs as well (Turtle Beach multisound products). Following this thread in to the present, does anyone have a utility for extracting data off of CD-ROM readers (IDE or SCSI) other than DIDO? I'm not copying music, it's for sampling and mixing (honest injun). p.s.: could someone forward this to the movable parts list? I don't have the address here. Ravis1 e-mailing from work. Travis L. this won't work. record players (usually) don't generate line level signals. i've got my 1200's plugged into my DJ mixer (a crappy old numark) which in turn plugs straight in to my audiomedia card on my mac. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...

I wouldn't recommend this one. Phono carts have a funky response curve and need a preamp to fix the eq. If you don't use a mixer or preamp (with phono inputs) it WILL sound like crap. peace out, brock out. np: V/A - 'East-Westercism'

radioshack no longer carries phono preamps.. I found this out when I first got my sl1200.. You'll have to buy an issue of Stereo Review or some other mag about stereo's and then check in the back, there are frequenly ads of places that do sell preamps, and yes, they are $30 (mine was $33) __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

Track down CDworx. It does a great job. I've used DIDO but always got errors but CDworx hardly ever gives errrors and makes clean copies every time. Guaranteed. Rusty

I also wanted to use DIDO for sampling off CD's.. but it wouldnt work with my CD-ROM.. apparently DIDO doesnt work with 50% of IDE drives supplied in PC's.. if anyone knows of other utils. please post to list... it is IDM related... :)
