Man that beat shows up everywhere! "Woo! Yeah! Woo! Yeah! Woo! Yeah!" etc. Anyway..speaking of the new single, Oil has got to be another FSOL disguise...after all, the oil funk mix is the same tune that showed up on that ISDN transmission to LA...right? khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

I think Oil is actually the junglist Leon Mar whom FSOL signed to their label...but I haven't heard the oil mixes though, cause my single's the UK version which only contains the short Leon Mar mix and the 4 "parts"(??). Regards, Phei Wee

^^^^^ interesting, then why did i get a postcard through the letterbox a week or so back advertising the new mixes of we have explosive and on the back in small writing at the bottom it says something like "first independant release on FSOL's label EBV...Oil "slight of hand" -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

Yeah, y'know FSOL has never used psuedonyms before....;) Actually, I had heard about that claim too - but I think it's a bit wierd to play a live set (well, as live as fsol is ever gonna get) and use someone else's remix. khannan suntharam kxs28972@bayou.uh.edu

This sounds very much like a sample from Bessie Smith, originally recorded in, ooh, the 1960s. I couldn't really disagree more with whoever made the positive comment about the 'stories' in Reload's Collection Of.. I lent this to someone and at first he didn't like the music because the stories were so bad. They really are awful. The new Locust single sounds pretty interesting - he gets away with using what in a more naive age we would call vocals. Even the 808 State mix is good. More detail later perhaps when I've listened more. adam

i heard this wacked out 12" last night called "electronic battle weapon". that's all it said on it. catalog number XDUSTDJLP1 or something very similar to that. no clues as to who it might be. the side that really kicked had this tinny beat with a very fucked up and mutated sample of a guy saying IT DOESN'T MATTER over and over again put through a seemingly endless variety of effect tricks. when the bass came in, WHAM... it was astounding. had an extremely intense breakdown followed by a buildup of static that eventually turned into a sort of pulsing wall of beat. it kept going and turned into this squirty little analog synth motif. the IT DOESN'T MATTER guy popped up again as well. the other side was more kinda standard drum machiney techno but still good. just not as blinding as IT DOESN'T MATTER. (that voice is still running through my head this morning). anybody know what/who this is? M.A.J. Huffman writes:

yeah, i commented on this when the album came out. the stories read like submissions for a pretentious college literary wannabe journal. i majored in english at school and crappy little booklets full of that kind of overwrought prose littered the floors at the building where i spent most of my time. ugh. speaking of overwrought prose, roll on the .sig... -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. This sounds like it could have been one of the promo copies of the Chemical Brothers - "It Doesn't Matter" from their album that was released just recently [Dig Your Own Hole.] The choon is massive and it sounds like what you're describing and from what I understand there was a 12" sent to some retailers along with promo copies of their Block Rockin Beats single and DYOH album. The XDUST part of the catalog number also sounds about right too -- The Bros last album was called Exit Planet Dust so... there may be some correlation there as well. -peter

so you're saying i shouldn't have been so quick to write them off as pop sell outs. :) there's life in the old boys yet, it would seem. "massive" is an understatement. this may even make up for Setting Sun *and* Life Is Sweet. that would be some feat. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. Could it be "It Doesn't Matter," from Chemical Brothers' newest album, _Dig_Your_Own_Hole_? Sounds like it could potentially match what you're describing. I'll bet one of them is the album version and the other a remix (hard to tell exactly which is which from the descriptions). -- Adam J Weitzman Individual, Inc. Yes. it's some kind of promo for the chemicals latest album. the "XDUSTDJLP1" also tells us that, since the official album's got "XDUSTCD2"... i guess you have got some dj promo thing... cheers, franz. - franz johan marino enmark '''''''' = ) - =-= = '''''''''' - - http://gargamel.com/plod -->-->--> -/ - - - ] '''''''' - - frankie@gargamel.com ''''''''''''' = -.. =-= = '''''''''' -

The title "electronic battle weapon " sounds to me like an american hip-hop DJ name, not like a brit/chems name. If they ripped it off for their disk, well, that's pretty pathetic. So what I'm wondering is the record as originally described (with the it doesn't matter stuff) the dj rectangle version or the chems ripping off the title? What's the verdict? -CF

yep. i got "dig your own hole" and verified that the brain-melting cut in question is indeed "it doesn't matter". the rest of the album doesn't live up to the standard set by that track (it's mostly pleasant enough non-challenging breakbeat music.) -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. The new chemicals album in it's entirety is on the astralwerks/caroline web page, and I tried in vain to find a single cut worth listening to more than a minute of. It seems like whatever ideas they may have had and displayed on their first 2 EPs are well and truly played out, and they're left with nothing but the ticks and affectations of their style, with no substance to hang it on. Really dreadful stuff in my opinion. To have started out so young and strong only to end there...tragic. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "i love the smell of new carpet. it makes me dizzy. just like when you fall in love." -- Mike Dvorkin Home Page, featuring Reagan on Black Velvet, the EMP Compilation CD, samples of my music, etc http://soli.inav.net/~kent/ Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3488 (fax)

yeah, there is a dismaying lack of progression, no doubt. there are *some* worthwhile moments tho, none of which will sound at all impressive over the web. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications How the drunk and the maimed both are dragged forward out of the arena like a boneless Christ, one man under each arm, feet dragging, eyes on the aether. i've got 2 12"s titled 'electronic battle weapon 1 &2' that are tools put together by the one of the wildest hip hop spinners dj rectangle, consist of fucked up breaks, tones and strange noises, perhaps the name was flinched from these? - don't think the 12 is anything to do with him rectangle won the dmc mix thing a few years back hands down, doin crazy stuff like placing a pure tone on one deck then picking the deck up and shaking it to create a tune i think he had too much time on his hands stuart @ 4thworld -- http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/4thworld/ check the 'propoganda' page - interviews + features on black dog/ as one/ musik aus strom / jimpster / compost / irdial + more

Is this true? I thought the Dust Bros. were entirely different people. They produced Paul's Boutique and Beck's Odelay, and have done some remixes and stuff. But I don't think they ARE the Chemical Brothers. Just a bunch of coincidences, I thought. Am I wrong? -CF

according to a recent electronic musician interview with the dust brothers (i think it was EM maybe keyboard .. not sure) there was a lengthy section about the chemical bros.. it seems that the chemicals were really big fans of the dust bros. (and why not .. very incredible work with the dust bros) and were originally named the dust bros (outta respect i guess) when the chems started to get big there were a couple of cease and desist papers sent about and the chemicals were forced to change their name & the werent to happy about it ... so most of their early work contains some thinly veiled rips at los bros dust ... the dust bros (for better or worse im not goin' there) think that the chems music is pretty trite and are really none too happy with the whole thing ... . annwn . .

Hmmm, interesting - in the new ish of Select, there's an article about the Chems and they said they didn't mind too much changing their name (since they *did* "steal" it from the Dust Bros originally). But I seem to remember it wasn't quite that friendly at the time.... cya brian

Basic history for IDMers: In the early 90s two British geezers put together an electronic act which they decide to call "Dust Brothers" as a "tribute" to the actual Dust Brothers of 'Paul's Boutique', 'Odelay', etc. fame. But the actual Dust Brothers don't like some British jokers using their name, so they sue them, and voila, Chemical Brothers are born. Huh?!, I cant believe that no-one stateside knew this?! The only releases made that were vaguely interesting or new were under the name 'The Dust Brothers', By the time they changed their name to Chemicals they were just another cog in the Underworld/Orbital commercial machine. If all the fuss you lot are making is over the records produced as The chemical Brothers then I sincerely give up. 'Hold that Bandwagon missy ahm a gittin' on' kF
