Listened to More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art this morning. It seems more immediately pleasing than Landcruising (which I like now but was whelmed by when it came out). It's nice to hear At Les in its proper context (rather than on IOTD5, where it sounded good but rather isolated). He seems to have got away with using what you might call cliched Detroit musical elements in a way that sounds invigorated. Not so sure about the ranting on the cover, but... SSR188, if you're interested. adam

Aw come on. The similarity is the whole point. Have you ever heard of *homage*? Do you seriously think that it is plagiarism? It's just cheesy homage, not plagiarism. Do you think that Carl Craig is so out of touch that he thinks no one will notice the similarity? Or that he thinks that the Talking Heads are some kind of obscure art rock band? Have you considered the option that he might be a Talking Heads fan? -CF

Does the manifest similarity between the two titles "More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art" (CC, bien sur) and "More Songs About Buildings and Food" (Talking Heads) bother anyone other than me? I've avoided this album simply on the basis of that virtual plagiarism. Well, also because the only CC i've consciously heard happens to be his mixes of Tori Amos' "God" single - very derivative stuff, eviscerated a good song & put nothing back in its place. Curious about something else - Autechre did a mix for Lamb. What single? Gold? God Bless? NP ecstatically, 3/4 full volume:Lamb, 'Gorecki' =-=-=-=signifier over signified signing off=-=-=-=

No, but I've never been a Talking Heads fan. Stuff like this (referencing other works) is something I usually appreciate, not loathe.

Please, do yourself a favor and give this man a chance. I haven't heard that Tori Amos mix, but I can say that Carl Craig puts out some insanely beautiful stuff. Check out the Psyche/BFC: Elements compilation for some of his work from 1989-1990 that includes "Chicken Noodle Soup", "Elements" and (one of my favorites) "How the West was Won". Don't let the dates scare you - this album more than holds its own when put next to the latest material. On a different style, slightly, try Paperclip People's "Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich". It's CC's more dance-oriented stuff (read: the funk literally drips from the disc). Two more releases and I'll stop evangelizing - Innerzone Orchestra's "Bug in the Bassbin" was recently re-released, to a storm of quotes from drum-n-bass's forerunners to the effect that this was an extremely influential record, and 69's "4 Jazz Funk Classics", which I still have to pick up. Give him a chance. You won't be dissapointed (and if you are, listen again). There have been so many albums using the "Songs about ..." template that I don't think being bothered is warranted.

Come back when you've listened to Psyche/BFC and 69.

It's an okay song, but really should be much better than okay to justify use of that name. adam

If that's your only experience of the works of Carl Craig I suggest you seek out the Psyche/BFC "Elements" compilation, any of the 69 EP's on Planet E, any e.p's on Fragile/Transmat, the Landcruising lp. and More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art before you talk shite in front of a few hundred people again. And what does "conciously heard" mean ? I thought the "intelligent" in the name of this list at least counted for something. Simon.

I'm gonna jump in here and suggest that he means "hearing something that is known to be by Carl Craig, as opposed to hearing some music without knowing that it's by Carl Craig, such as at a club or on the radio or blasting out of a boombox"

So the consensus is that I oughtta check out 'elements'. Will do. Appreciate the honest & informative responses to my caution ('dont have $15 to throw at every single thing this list gives its seal of approval to). honestly, *homage* to the heads had never occurred to me - after reading the 'face' interview with CC a while back i got the impression that he might be one of those pseudo-purists, casting aspersions upon anything guitar-jangly-indie a la talking heads, the kind of guy who might mix tori amos for a buck but wouldn't necessarily like it -- as those mixes would certainly seem to indicate.

If this cheeky monkey can consciously recall with the veracity of a rabid trainspotter the name of every artist behind every track that that's ever happened to cruise through the apparently acoustic space between his own ears, i'll *eat* a copy of "more songs about food and revolutionary art." =-=-=signifier over signified signing off=-=-=

Here's a fwd. with the track listing. If you want a copy, send 2 Maxell XLII-S 100 min. cassette tapes (he'll keep one to cover postage costs) for each one you want. The address is: Tim Gill 2400 Twin Oaks Drive. Oxnard, California 93030 USA ....If Maxell brand tapes are unavailable to you, email him and he'll work something out - otherwise, DO send only that specific brand. jeff Subject: (idm) Aphex Tape: The Final Cut Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 02:09:48 -0700 From: Tim Gill <lovecrft@fishnet.net> To: idm@hyperreal.org Alright, I have received 5 out of the 9 tapes that folks said they were going to send me. This totals about 150 minutes worth of music, so we have plenty to go on a 100 min. tape. Of course, we do have to decide what goes on it, so here is the list of what I have recieved. Keep in mind there will be no additions to this list, the contribution stage is over, I just can't make you folks wait any longer :) Final Aphex Music Pool: ----------- -Analogue Bubblebath II -Analogue Bubblebath III -Analogue Bubblebath IV -Aphex Airlines -Cunt -Hangable Auto Bulb 2 -All 4 Joyrex EP's -2 Nav Katze Remixes -Phlid -Q-Chastic -Soit Soit -Wagon Christ Spotlight remix Although I did receive copies of Donkey Rhubarb and On Remixes, almost every perosn who wrote me about what they wanted on the tape said that these were too available to go on a tape like this. I agree. So here's the plan, for two days, I will accept advice on what should go on the final tape, send me your e-mails and in two days I'll post a final listing of EXACTLY what is going on the tape. And at that point I will ALSO give you all the information you need for getting your very own copy of it. Thanks for all the contributions, guys. Tim P.S. I realise I have been ignoring about 3 or 4 emails a week from people asking how they can get a copy of the tape, what's on it, etc...well, in the next two days I will have all those answers posted to the list. Please bear with me.
