Why make it private? What's to hide about talking about women writing dance music? K Hand from Detroit and Saskia Sledgers who runs DJAX-UP-BEATS come to mind off the top of my head. Also half of GTO/Tricky Disco was a woman (who is greatly missed since she unfortunately passed away). Hrm, there's also SIL from Finland on Sahko who's a woman if I remember correctly. _ -robert | |___ ____ ____ _____ | |_ \ / -__/ / _/ | _ \ __________ |_____/ \___\ |_| | |__/ / -studio- \ _________________________________ |_| http://icse1.ucsd.edu/~rcurlee/ \

If I recall, this is also Steps-Dis-Charge who is featured on the new Instinct 2CD ambient compilation, "Ambient Systems II." According to the bio, "Steps-Dis-Charge is one of the few female artists to receive recognition and respect in a genre that is overly male dominated. A native of Austria, who spends most of her time in New York, Brokesch also records for Vienna's Cheap Records and Finaldn's highly regarded Sahko Recordings." Don't forget Small Fish With Spine. There is actually an Urb article on the Stands right now but it is really brief. However, she does talk about the fact that electronica is a "boys with their toys" genre for the most part. I need to get ready for work but if nobody else posts more info on herthen I will add to this tonight. Steve

Speaking of Andrea Parker, is that Rocking Chair Ep ever going to come out? I have been reading about it for a long time. I also thought that the Jedi Knights - Solina (with Carl Craig remixes) was suppose to be out by now. I guess everything keeps getting pushed back. B i l l S a m u e l s w l s @ U . A r i z o n a . Jan - Loved seeing your post about women in idm. One of our artists, Sara Campbell, aka NRSHA, is just beginning her quest for recognition. We released her first 12" "Annias" in August, got a nice review in URB and BPM Culture, and her second 12" comes out in November. She's a wonderfully independent, strong-willed young woman from San Francisco. I'm so fortunate to be able to work with her! I think she's an original space cowgrrrrrl. Many people on this list care about intellectual property in music and art for several reasons. First, because it's just morally right not to rip-off other people's work and tout it as your own. And, second, the (oftentimes small) earnings we make from our work, sustains artforms and musical genres that, all too often, don't get much support. Why is a Web page author any different from a novelist or a musician if what he/she creates is wholly individual?

Ok.. not to fall into the baited thread trap.. but... For all the newbies (female and male).. there exists several recurring threads on IDM (and every other mailing list/newsgroup). One is the infamous "Women in IDM" thread where everyone chimes in on their favorite woman(en) IDM performer, eventually a list all the current (and not-so-current) women music makers in the IDM genre end up being listed (in fact, I think I have the most complete back in the mail file megs somewhere :-P). For instance... Andrea Parker, Riz Mazlen, whether or not their exists a Lisa Carbon, etc.etc. and then it usually flares into some tangent socioeconomic philosophy chatter that fills the list for a good week (you know what I'm talkin' 'bout). Not that its a bad thing.. its just what the original poster was referring to. And, for the record, it was never _Girls_ in IDM... we aren't THAT sexist around here =;-) Although, I think "les femmes IDM " was mentioned once, but it was just too avant garde for this group <insert sarcasm.. as if ANYTHING were too avant garde for us :-O> I looove pretension. Havin' a liddle late evening fun... L8r, Kev. elizabeth wrote:

What?! So I'm not the only female lurker? Haha. So what's the deal? I'm new here & haven't really noticed any gender bias before now, but then again, I'm the only female grad student in my department & quite used to being "the chick." For baby chickens maybe! Or for the 'Feathered up and Feather brained' fluffy bikini types! Maybe they'd think it was cute. If you want us women on IDM to be called 'Chicks on IDM' what do you want the lads to be called, Elizabeth, 'Cocks on IDM'? :) Can't see the necessity for terms of gender distinction here myself, what relevance does that have on email? and besides, you should hear the array of words for women on the Surfing mailing lists and usenets that I have to studiously ignore to get to the info I want! It's a bit sad really, in flippin 1997! Alessandra
