Hey, Photek (or any other good jungle) played at 33rpm becomes thick, fuzzy, abstract triphop. Try it, you'll like it. -Phil [----------] [---] [-----] [-----] [-----] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [----------] [----------] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [---] [--------] [-----] [-----] [---] [-----] [----------] Home is where the stereo is!

I'll bite. Don't have any Photek and just made my first Chris Jeffs purchase on Saturday. I'm pleasantly surprised with Cyclobian Sunset. Its not exactly what I expected and I'm quite enjoying it. I figured from the label (Rephlex) and the company he's been lumped in with, that the music would be much noisier, beat oriented, and lo-fi. But hey! There's melody! WOW! Tracks one and two are more melody oriented, while the third is noisy-ish and repetitive. Track four begins very lovely (I'd tape it for bubble baths in the dark) and builds into something very Incunabula-ish. Track five begins with an elastic/bouncy thump and continue in the same vain. I won't describe each track, but I will be ordering every Chris Jeff's release in the near future. Glad that new discog is up and running! From the CD insert: "Cylobian Sunset was recorded between March and October 1994, at CSRF Manchester and London (except the last track, which was recorded at Clissolog)" Dave Ross

yeah, maybe you should get another seminal release, entitled "Industrial Folk Songs", it's along the same lines of musical aptitude as "Cylobian Sunset," just expressed in a different way. This is a single you don't need to listen to first; if you're a lover of melody then this is for you. Love to hear what you think. james b gill being a student

I'm not. I loved the Kinesthesia 12"s to death, same with the album (though not as much as the 12"s, wish they were on CD so I could play them while commuting). The Cylob album was a disappointment though, because Chris seems to have gone all poppy on us just like Mike Paradinas. I for one really love that dark, evil music that used to come out on RePHLeX, the stuff that combined dissonant synthi melodies layered on top of complex distorted percussion with psychedelic, isolatioist sounds/timbres. Like Church of Pain, with its incredible screwed up organ chords and such, wow. Truly unique. Cylobian Sunset, by comparison, sounds like a waste of good talent and music equipment. Chris could have really churned out some killer stuff that made good use of his analog machines and his phenomenal innovation/creativity, but all he ended up doing was creating yet another cheesy pseudo electro revival album, with very predictable and disposable melodies a la any other music in this genre. It's not bad at all, mind you, it's actually extremely good. Very well done. He could have done something far, far, far better though. Oh well, maybe next time. If you like this album though and you do not have the Kinesthesia 12"s, get them. You have no idea what you are missing. Photek on the other hand... buy UFO/Rings Around Saturn, and try out the latter at 33... it's amazing.

okay this is the second time i've seen this suggestion on the list in as many days. i feel the need to comment... last night i figured what the hell, i'll try rings around saturn at 33 and see if it sounds cool. it didn't. it sounded like a brilliant atmospheric drum & bass track played at the wrong speed. just my two cents, matt

Why does melodic = poppy? Mike P.'s Jake Slazenger stuff is definetley more upbeat and melodic and not as dark as his earlier recently rereleased stuff, but that's the whole point of the Slazenger moniker. Wait and see what he puts out as mu-ziq in a couple months. Anyway, it's impossible to satisfy all of the people all of the time, as you can tell by some of the reactions on the list. Somepeople think the hardcore-super fast-distorted breakbeat old school rephlex stuff is a bore while others totally love it and think they've sold out now. Oh well.

You can't expect C. Jeffs to keep putting out the same record again and again. What's wrong with doing something different? The Kinesthesia ep's are great, but the music on the first one is like 4 or 5 years old now. Let the poor guy move on. And if you don't like the Cylobian Sunset or Loops & Breaks LP's you'll like his newer unreleased stuff even less. Anyway, Cylobian Sunset is my fav. album of the year after Feed Me Weird Things. //"'' //''resh Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA
