i think, at this point in time, IDM refers to any of the following: sampling / sequencing / recording a bunch of relatively lame tracks and wanking around with a bunch of DSP plugins until it sounds cool fucking around with metasynth for a few hours bumming a copy of MSP and pluggo from someone and wanking around on them for a few hours (kit clayton doesn't apply because he actually writes code for cycling'74) using every single aspect of SFX Machine and then time stretching every other bar of the song saying that you write you're own software when you're actually full of shit Hyperprism, Hyperprism, Hyperprism once you get a hold of all these 'toys' it's very easy to fall into the IDM trap. (i guess autechre and rdj were smart in that they used this stuff before other groups knew about them or knew how to use them... or maybe it was just dumb luck) although the speedy j (public energy) album has some unique quality that keeps it relatively fresh and somewhat original in my opinion. (meaning that i haven't grown tired of it...) i'd have to agree with my friend who lives in NYC who stated (well, his boss actually) that music isn't going to change until another social conflict / revolution occurs. (i.e. world war) a catalyst i suppose. of course all these views and opinion are biased, but that's the purpose of a newsgroup i suppose. (and to reassure oneself that they're not the only dork online at 12:00 in the morning when they could certainly be doing much more productive things) lyrics would be nice. i think lyrics would 'serve' the IDM community well. (is it just me, or is supercollider's head on a really fucking cool album?) song number 7 on incunabula is nice. (i like the drum programming) cout<< cin>> return 0 "MIDI is a place in France." (from the PD list) btw, anyone who's interested in the ant-zen label, imminent starvation, synapscape, and savak will be performing at the Black Cat in march. I haven't heard the Supercollider record, but BMG was on WDET in Detroit a few weeks ago previewing the forthcoming Gerhard Potuznik (sp) album on Interdimensional Transmissions, and _that's_ a vocal album that sounds really promising. Along those lines, did you catch the "Oral-olio" EP on Ersatz from last year? -d.w. -- Streaming freeform internet radio: http://bewitched.dyndns.org/radio/index.html mp3 stream: http://216.32.166.75:7042 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

WOW! Nice playlist, Dave!!! I'm about to tune in right now - count me as among those who "...want to hear Philip Glass, Wu-Tang Clan, Nobukazu Takemura (et al) in the same radio program". Having seen that playlist, I have a couple of comments: -what's Nobakazu's "Scope" like? Is it like melodic Oval (a description I'd heard)? Does it have as much of the childlike melody stuff as "Child's View"? -To Rococo Rot - Cars: how is it, and what's it like? -Sam Prekop - Showrooms: ditto -Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody?: PROPS DUE!!! That's the JAM. -Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Lucky Man: ditto, in a totally different way :) Anyway, serious respect - keep it eclectic. I must concur... Nice to see people who dislike genres as much as I. My only problem is that it seems to be having connection problems... Im gonna second this. I've been listening for the past 202 minutes and all i have to say is that its an awesome eclectic mix of music. Anyone who drops Spangle Maker gets my vote for cool as hell. thanks! m. plex/elliot -----Original Message----- From: William VanLoo [mailto:wdvanloo@sigma6.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 01, 2000 2:06 PM To: Dave Walker; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (idm) Intelligent Dance Something

I'm not sure it's _that_ much like Oval, though they do have in common the ability to "imply" melody in the midst of a torrent of glitches & clicks without stating it outright. Anyonw will till you I'm far from being a big glitch fan, but both these artists find ways of being traditionally musical while throwing out the entirety of traditional music structure, if that makes sense. I haven't heard "Child's View"

It's _not_ a Gary Numan cover, it's an original track, and one of my favorites from last year. It's basically just a cool, quirky instrumental pop song, with distant echoes of Krautrock.
quoted 1 line -Sam Prekop - Showrooms: ditto> -Sam Prekop - Showrooms: ditto
This is a really sweet song. If you've heard some of the recent poppier stuff coming from some of the eggheads in Chicago (Aerial M, Jim O' Rourke, etc.) you'll be in the right ballpark. There seems to be a bit of a movement towards grafting some of the (ulp -- terminology) post-rock influences onto things that resemble three-minute pop songs, and, surprisingly, it works very well. This one has some nice Brian Wilson style harmonies.
