My friends often ask me how I can afford to buy new albums each week given that I'm the cliche starving student, etc., etc. I can't, but what the hell....I need to hear the stuff. My question: what percentage of your income to you think you blow (note the extremly negative connotation) on music each week? If you are a DJ, at least it could be rationalized as a necessary cost of doing business. What about the rest of us idiots.....is it rational to spend half our cheques on new aural treasures?? HMM? Dave.

When I was a student in Leicester, graduated last July, I must have spent about a third of my income on records. Didn't eat very regularly but survived reasonably intact. Tim PS Don't have hardly any money to spent on music I want now. Music isn't very cheap here in Chile.

Here are my "Stats" for this year: January 1996: $739.85 February 1996: $524.67 March 1996 (present): $438.19 Definetely an expensive hobby! Perhaps if I have time I will do a 1995 total. I'm kinda scared to. Dean-O-Matic On now: AFX mixes of Nav Katze. Quote: "Doughnuts...is there anything they can't do?!" -Homer J. Simpson

Wow...and I thought I spent a lot on music. Are you a DJ? How in the world do you find the time to listen to $500-600 worth of music a month? That's at least 25 CD's/LP's a month. Do you play things once or twice then file them away? :-) I sometimes end up doing that because I have too many things to listen to. I've collected around 2000 pieces over the years and haven't listened to 2/3 of them in 1-2 years. Some things longer... As a result I've become more conservative in my buying but still spend at least $150 per month average (US dollars). Tony

The most remarkable thing to me is that he know _exactly_ how much he's spent! I could roughly estimate that I spend between 3 to 400 UKP per month on music, which is in the same ballpark. Thats around 30% of my income, and twice my accommodation costs, the payment on my car, or my pension contribution. A proper weekend trip round my 3 favourite stores usually renders me over a hundred pounds poorer, and that happens 2 or 3 times a month. Extra trips into the crappy HMV near where I work, mail orders and internet trades etc add another 50 - 100 per month at a guess. And since you asked him, I'm not a DJ per se, but I am a bedroom DJ and my primary leisure activity is listening to music, either for its own sake or in th form of mixing. I set a timer on my hi-fi to wake me with a tape each morning. I always play music in the car. I get in at least 2 hours listening (and often nearer 5) each night if I don't go out. I have around 3000 items and I too have a lot (I mean a LOT) of stuff that hasn't been listened to for a long time. But most of it I would not wish to part with. As for keeping up with my purchase rate I currently have around 250-300 records on the floor where they are still undergoing full familiarisation prior to being filed on the shelf. The only stuff I haven't actually heard yet arrived in the post this morning, however. About 30-60 percent, depending on how many trips I make to record stores, what is in stock, and how much I make in that week, etc. etc. Now I'm out of a job though, so I predict that I will go totally nuts in about six more days, and then drive down to the bank, get my savings, blow that, then get a credit card, etc...

I once went into my fave record store (Aron's in L.A.) and with 15 minutes till closing time dropped $120. Today I went into the same store, picked up a couple CDs, walked around with them a bit, put them back and left the store empty handed. My retirement fund breathed a sigh of relief. "Just Say No" - its that simple.

Just under 15%, according to Quicken. It's a smaller percentage than what other people have reported, but I make a lot of money. :-)

well, as a working musician, i save all my receipts - all music expenses are tax-deductible. so i HAVE to know how much i spent or the government will have my ass in a sling. anyway, since i just did my '95 taxes i can reveal that i spent around 750 US buckazoids on LPs/CDs. i spent about 9 times that amount on new music gear for my studio tho. so be thankful, buying the stuff is still less expensive than making it! -jon

The church of holy roland reccommends that you give 40-50% of your income to vinyl and cd's, so being the god-fearing person i am, i reluctantly oblidge. I can spend close to 1 G a month on this addiction, but I try not to. There is one unnamed music psycho on this list that was buying about $1500 worth of stuff a month from me alone. Someday I hope to have just about every piece of avant garde, wacky, techno, ambient, electronic vinyl that I have ever wanted, pretty ridiculous and unattainable goal though. I would like to have a massive collection that covers a whole lot of range and artists. Instead of being like Mike, I want to be like Joey Beltram who has said that he has between 45,000-65,000 records. I have a long ways to go. Derek 0--\___/--\___/---0 moses@teleport.com
