I played some of my old Future Sounds records today and it has me wondering in what year Terry Baldwin decided to end this label and why? Can anyone tell me how many records were actually released on this label? And why o why did Rephlex not license Neil Howard's Perpetual Motion on their recent Future Sounds compilation? That one definately deserved to be on the comp! For those of you who want to hear some of the best Future Sounds stuff I suggest you try and get hold of a copy of the Dancemania compilation (Dancemania 100 ;1988). It still rocks! Also one of my other fave Chicago labels seems to have disappeared. I am talking about Rhythm Beat with all its classic Club Mcm releases! Are they still releasing stuff in the nine-six? And talking about classics: Has the NY electro ESG-UFO (1982) ever been released on a comp? I am sure that everyone who is familair with the Video Graff videos knows what track I am talking about! Also it has been sampled many times by hiphop artists. It seems to be impossible to get hold of a copy though. Now I remember Jon Drukman asking a question about Frederik Bartloff a few weeks ago. Frederik is the guy who did the Love Craft record on Apollo back in the day. Jon wanted to know whether Frederik has done any other projects. Nobody has answered his question yet. I can only think of one other record myself and that is Tz 10. The Tz series was released by R&S without any credits, but Outlander (R&S artist) said in an (old) interview that it was Frederik who did the 10th release. Tz 10 sounds very dubby and kinda reminds me of The Orb's Perpetual Dawn. Maybe there is a Scandinavian IDM er who can name Frederik's other projects if any? Mazzel! Ray. On now: The Revolutionary Generation LP (Moving Shadow); excellent D'n'B by Alex Reece, Wax Doctor and Dj Pulse!

What is this, any record made before 1988 is considered "Electro" by default? ESG - a family of sisters (and one brother) who were all around 16 or so at the time - made minimalist Funk. "UFO" is minimalist Funk. "Moody" is minimalist Funk. I've never seen that track on a compilation (but yes, I have heard it sampled a zillion times), but then I wouldn't have noticed - I have all the ESG records sitting in my closet somewhere :-) (Speaking of "labels, where have they gone" ... ESG's label was 99 Records, run by Ed Bahlmann (sp?) in New York. The Bush Tetras were labelmates. I wonder what happened to Ed, the store - 99 Records was a store first - and his label ... ) Strange But True: ESG opened for Public Image, Ltd. at the Pasadena Convention Center in Nov. 1982 ... (the other night was Savage Republic; great shows, but alas, Wobble had left by then ... ) - Greg

i would say "moody" is right there at the beginning of house music too. there is a fairly faithful cover version of UFO by unrest. it was on their sub pop "factory" covers 7". Moody has been re-released and i believe re-recorded by a few different people. bomb the bass covered it on their second album. there was actually a cd released by ESG last year. it was mostly live and had a couple of the older tracks tacked on the end. i think moody and UFO were both on there. i think they've also turned up on various "breaks" records. ESG's album "come away" is not too bad either.
