Being that I live in Canada, I've just recently picked up this amazing CD
(which has probably been around Britain for about a year) called Experimental
Audio Research. Not fearing the flames of IDMers, I will go on to say that
this is primarily guitar-based but totally effects-heavy ambience. Main
persons responsible are Sonic Boom (ex-Spacemen 3) and Kevin Shields (My
Bloody Valentine). Very much like Sonic Boom's EP Ecstacy in Slow Motion
(sampled by Irresistable Force in 'Symphony in E') Drones like you wouldn't
believe, some use of samplers or analogue synths but still 10x better than
most of the 'ambient' stuff that I've heard of late.
