I've listened to electronic music since the early 80s (think Depeche
Mode/Art of Noise) before migrating to (post)industrial (late 80s -
Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, nine inch nails, Skinny Puppy) and
industrial (SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Coil,
Throbbing Gristle) and on to IDM/ambient (isolationism)/noise in the
mid 90s (Aphex Twin, Speedy J, Illusion of Safety, Lustmord, Merzbow,
Brighter Death Now, etc.) and I've always loved some sports, football,
namely.
I played football and some other sports and have always been fairly
active, but I also played Dungeons and Dragons and was really into
computers and synthesizers from an early age (I lusted after an Ensoniq
Mirage in the 80s but had to settle for some cheap Roland
piano-emulator while playing Ultima IV on my C64 and later on my Amiga;
thankfully now I own a Yamaha VL1, Yamaha FS1R, Crumar DS-2, Kawai
K5000S, Korg Oasys and Waldord XTk to assuage the lust I had for the
Mirage way back when).
It's true that electronic music fans are generally not sport
enthusiasts, but it's not always the case. It seems like most
"underground" musicians and their fans come from a certain antisocial,
antiestablishment mindset, wherein these fans and musicians have bitter
memories of being beaten up by jocks in high school, thus (perhaps)
eschew sports later in life. Or perhaps I'm generalizing. :)
