perhaps this is more a question for the microsound list, but why
can't those artifacts (such as hiss, distortion, tape saturation) be
considered part of the music, even part of the composition?
digital processes create artifacts too, sometimes to interesting
effect. several times i've heard crappy realaudio samples online,
bought the CD, and then found i actually preferred the .ra files
because the processing screwed up the sound in a way that was cooler
than the "real" recording.
