I've noticed that a lot of times, the standout tracks on small-time record compilations are the otherwise no-name artists. I'm not quite sure why that is. I personally think that it's because it's easy to hone one track to near perfection, but doing that with 6-12 songs is pretty daunting. But I'm sure a lot of it is also simply new artists. You've gotta get started somehow. Most compilations with big name artists don't have exclusive tracks anyway. focus on getting really good things from individual artists who are new or otherwise unknown but are still making fantastic music that will fit on the compilation. Make sure you state exactly what kind of music you're looking for. If you just say "idm" then you'll not only get a very diverse range of music, you'll probably also end up with a lot less music overall, simply because artists will think the style is too broad. As chthonic said, think about other comps. having a website that doesn't suck and that has the relevant information is nice, too. i organized and was a small part of a remix chain that was among people on the old idm-making list, and it's not exactly easy. I had to set up my own ftp server, make sure people could connect to it, host the files for people to download, etc. if you're simply harvesting tracks it's a bit easier to ask for multiple formats, but the fact that there were about 11 participators in the first chunk and only 6 or so in the second chunk of the remix chain that i organized should go to show that it's easy to get people interested, but pretty hard to keep them if things aren't turning into what they expected. -- eggytoast.com : eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
