my label released a successful underground music compilation
(we sold out and broke even, which was the intention). what
seems to be standard practice in our area of music is to solicit
interest from more contributors than you need. payment is in
copies of the finished compilation, which they can sell as they
wish. this usually ranges from 10-20 copies per artist, depending
on the number of copies being pressed, and how much you can
afford to give away according to your financial plan. this may not
go over well with artists of a certain caliber, but you never know,
they might say yes if your concept is solid enough and your
approach is professional.
some artists may ask to know who else is going to be on the
compilation. sometimes this is a deciding factor for them,
because they may not want to be associated with certain others, or
may see a benefit in being on the same collection with bigger or
more diverse names. however, it's been my experience as both
an orgnaizer and contributor that the solicited list often differs
vastly from the final list. so it's best to get your plan, your label,
your "raison d'etre" totally together so you're not planning on the
participation of a few big names to make it all come together.
think about the best comps you ever heard and what made them
great, ask yourself why you want to do one, and if you have enough
excitement about it, it can become infectious enough to get others
excited too. but you also have to stay on top of it, stay organized,
and make sure all the details (artwork, pressing, distribution,
advertising) and worked out in advance. there are too many
compilations out there anyway to stick out another half-assed one.
if you're going to bother, make it a great one.
