Hmm, you could try Unkle's "Psyence Fiction" album, which came out a
few years back on Mo Wax. I don't know if you could describe it as
minimal, but it's certainly downbeat and electronic.
They made the mistake of hyping it up a bit too much ("indie meets
trip-hop!", "James Lavelle is God!"), so the popular press gave it a
bit of a kicking, but there's some pretty decent stuff on there --
especially if you liked DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing". Anyway, you'll
find the likes of Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft and Badly Drawn Boy
providing vocals on some of the tracks. Plus Ian Brown on the "Be
There" single (worth getting hold of the UK edition, because it also
has the video for "Rabbit in Your Headlights" and a pretty decent Noel
Gallagher remix of "The Knock").
Are you after either male or female vocalists specifically? I tend to
prefer the female voice, in which case you might like to check out the
Cocteau Twins' "Four Calendar Cafe", which other than "Victorialand"
is perhaps the most ambient, chilled-out album they've done.
Definitely more synths than guitars. Be careful though -- once you've
bought one CT album, you'll want to buy them all.
Tori Amos' "From the Choirgirl Hotel" may surprise a people too. Lots
of dark, swirling atmospherics and dirty beats on quite a few of the
tracks. Quite trip-hoppy in places. Check out the track "Cruel" here:
