FM = Frequency Modulation.
I wouldn't say it, or any FM synth, is great for evolving pads. That's
more the league of a kawai k5000 or oberheim matrix-1000. And forget it
for any sort of useful bass. (except of course, sinewaves and the infamous
"latelybass") It's good for plucked sounds, like harpsichords, electric
pianos, and weird, extremely raw digital FX.
Also, I wouldn't want somebody picking up the DX-7 thinking it's easy to
learn :/

Also very true. I'm not sure why these rawk stars pick on DX-7's to
destroy, or pose with while playing. I think I saw crystal method banging
on one while it wasn't plugged in to anything.
