Brock, I've been on the list for quite some time myself, and I've come to the realization that IDM-L is not really the place for me. Here's why. I often download my mail in the morning, select all new IDM messages, excepting a few messages with interesting subject lines or from people I know and respect, and delete the rest. Why? I think IDM-L is far too broad. I don't enjoy much of the music that gets discussed here, although I do stay on because of the rare gems. So what's the answer? For me, it's keeping a subscription to IDM & treating it as a totally secondary entity, instead of the one true community that I belong to for music discussion. In addition to IDM, I am on a number of genre-specific lists - Microsound, minimalism, 313, ambient. These lists have a much more narrow focus and much better signal-to-noise ratio. Unfortunately, this doesn't say much for the future of IDM, but maybe it offers some suggestions to those who have been long-time members and are frustrated in the way Brock is. checking in from time to time, Bill / dj marathon -- AppNet MidWest Interactive [formerly Sigma6] / http://www.appnet.com now available: http://techno.ca/cognition/show598.htm always on: http://www.chromedecay.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
