... I mean, we
are the "supporters" as he calls us, and we certainly (at least
the
majority) don't think that The Prodigy, Chemical Bros. and
whatever the heck
Eric Clapton's techno project is called is what we believe to be
good
electronica. I never even heard of some of the groups mentioned.
If you look at what all the 15-20 year old "rave" kids with the baggy
pants and the colored hair and the tongue peircings and the "I'm so
freaky" attitude are listening to, you'll see that its the Prodigy,
Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Underworld, etc. And probably U2.
It's the same as back in the mid 80's when the hip english dance music
of the time hit mainstream - the Cure, New Order, Love and Rockets, etc.
(And I think electronica will be just as unsuccessful, i.e., rawk will
still win) What happened is the number of makeup-wearing boys and
wastrel vampira girls actually INCREASED even as the core listening
groups of that scene tried to disavow themselves of having ever liked
the cure or whatever and turned back inwards to their Wedding Parties
and their Falls and their Cabaret Voltaire.
There's a huge scene of these kids. 99% of them probably never heard of
Squarepusher or even aphex. The most exciting thing they will ever do in
their life is X at a New Years Eve rave. They are dumb ass kids who like
prodigy because they saw it on MTV. And when all these articles talk
about a "burgeoning scene" of electronica, they mean ONLY those 5 or six
electronic bands which MTV has in regular rotation.
AMP is already going downhill, just as 120 minutes did ten years ago.
It'll always have some of our freinds on it (just as 120 minutes does
even now) but not quite as many.
NOTE: I do not mean to offend you freaky looking people out there. I
think those freaky rave kids look super sexy and much better than their
grunge, jock, punk, metal, or whatever counterparts. I am freaky
looking. But that's just genetics.
