Brilliant. Entirely different from what I expected, and better than I
could have hoped. M&R collide their patented rhythmic crunch with old
surf-rock riffs, stately big band promenades and mystery movie themes
with wildly successful results. There's two tracks I always skip (the
first and the one with the burping), but the rest of it is genius. It's
mood lies somewhere between the Auteurs remixes and Ventolin, with a
much less malignant edge. The startlingly negative knee-jerk reactions
this album has received on IDM make me think that people need to lighten
up a bit around here.
Also superb is the new Elfish Echo album on KM20. Imagine a meeting of
Silver Sound-era Atom Heart with Spanners-mode Black Dog. Beautiful
attention to detail, all kinds of crazy sounds, tracks that progress and
develop, and absolutely nutty breakbeat percussion breaking out all over
the place. I haven't heard a better IDM-ish record this year.
