Well, for those of us that go off in the odder veins of IDM - especially
"jap jazz", the Mo' Wax stuff, and ohmygod the new Sabres of Paradise
album, it's not that big of a stretch to imagine Q-Tip rhyming for
Portishead, for example.
A few rap "artists" have put out 12" singles with just *instrumental*
versions of their songs; Boogie Down Productions has a few with a bass
that just kicks. That's the other side of the coin - but sample at will. :-)
All I can say is go for it, Richie. If it's got a good beat, you can dance
to it, and it doesn't end up on some stupid K-Tel comp, it's probably
worth a try.
Dave
p.s. The new Sabres is incredible. Dub-Happy Kraftwerk with Duane Eddy on
guitar, produced by Sly and Robbie. Not really, of course. Anyone see any
remixes from this record? Some of the tracks could be real stormers...
