Monday, July 11th, 1994 at 5:35pm hi there - i've recently gotten the "one a.d." compilation from waveform and i am particularly enjoying the 'soma holiday' track from G.O.L. does anyone know anything about G.O.L.? i've never heard of them, and i'd love to hear more of them if they are as consistently good as this track seems to indicate. btw, i remember reading mixed reviews of this compilation, but i'd have to say that i weigh in on the strongly positive side. for those of you who haven't heard it, it could probably be described as mostly ambient, mostly dub, very lush, and thoroughly electronic. the bpm's are generally around 100, and the beat structures stay away from the straight, 4/4 house rhythms - - usually they're rolling, rock-type beats with a little swing on the sixteenths. lot's of bubbling 303's, kraftwerkian high hats. heavy delay and reverb... very spacey, some classical indian references, react 2 rhythm-type female vocal chants, moody, nice colors. on it: templeroy pentatonik G.O.L. banco de gaia higher intelligence agency a positive life sandoz original rockers enjoy! ______________________________________________________________________________ ### ###### ### ###### ### ### ###### ### ### ############## ### ### ### ######################### ### ### ### #### ########### #### ### ### ### ### #### ########### ####### ### ### ### ### ########## ### ### ### ########## ### ### ### #### ##### ### ### ########## ##### ### ### ########## ##### ### ##### ### jwgrote@ucs.indiana.edu ##### ______________________________________________________________________________

I got the one AD yesterday along with the 'Excursions in Ambience" third dimension... I must say they both suck and i never want to hear any of this music ever again... OOOOPS...that was my alter ego... I really enjoyed the one ad...but the group i was most interested in was "A Positive Life"...they have 2 mixes of the same song on the comp...i played it on my show last night... I just liked the feel of it... And for $0.00 its a pretty good deal :) The Third Dimension left a bit to be desired for me...but the overall cd was good...i thought it was put together with a more commercial mindset, though...it has more of the relatively well known artists in the genre on it... Aphex...FSOL...Seefeel...the "Big Names"... The last one was more obscure so it left me with a feeling of "ha ha ha! I have music that no one around here knows about :>" But the artists on the 3D are sort of known in these here parts...plus the stuff is too short...the average last time was about 9-11 mins..this time id guess about 7 mins is average...thanks to FSOL's untypically short 3.4 min track... I dont have the discs here with me or i would be more specific... but i still feel like the 2nd orbit is the best of the series thus far... later jasonosaj

I personally thought that Third Dimension was good, but that the Steve Fisk track made me want to throw the whole disc out the window. Talk about a vibe killer...who needs that crap? Putting guitar-based stuff on it was a pretty cool move, though, and the Aphex and Air tracks... whoo! Stuart Shea 8)
