I picked up the CD single on Too Pure and must say it's brilliant. Deep bass lines, distorted guitars, drums samples, and a touch of acid lines are mixed into complete ambient-techno bliss. The best thing on Too Pure I think, can't wait for a full length work. Does anyone know where these guys hail from? Also: - The Global Communications Chapterhouse remix is very good. - Ken Ishi's sort of compilation on R&S is very good, techno ambient with a strange eastern sound. Later, Mohsen

One of them is from Dusseldorf (home of Kraftwerk), and the other from Koln/Cologne (home of Can). They cite both bands, but particularly Can, as influences. They have an album out this week in the UK, called "Vulvaland", which is more of the same (i.e. fantastic). CD has an extra track and two hidden tracks (one of which is similar to "Quoth"), and the vinyl version (initially, at least) has a 4-track remix 12" with it. As Mohsen says, they mix acid/ambient sounds with distorted guitars and random noise - tunes you can whistle *and* weird sounds, which can't be bad. Andrew. thanks for the tip, i would have skipped it in the store today, but after a close look i picked up the vinyl version with the remix-12". the remixer is the only name on the cover familiar to me (this is my first too pure...): ec80r... also known as e-de-cologne... or just call him patrick... some boy who still goes to school, and usually records for the mono tone label... guess what style... can't wait to get home to witness the birth of ambient/gabber crossover... p.

It's called _Vulvaland_, it's Too Pure CD 36, and it's rather enjoyable. I can't really describe this recording; think of Seefeel, replace the guitar loops with synthesized melody loops, subtract any vocals, push the tempo up just a tad, and compose it in a somewhat non-linear fashion, and throw in some general weirdness. I don't know if it would appeal to the IDM community at large, but I enjoy the recording quite a bit. Worth at least a listen. - Adam J Weitzman INDIVIDUAL, Inc. weitzman@individual.com

The full length album is just about the same and some more. There is also a spooky track with vocals that is way cool. I was a bit surprised to find the cold reception the work has got in the music press ! Mohsen

I take it you mean Schnee Bud? Great track, agreed. If you don't own Vulvaland (Pure CD 36), do yourself a favor and pick it up now. Listen to track #3, Uah, and see if that doesn't do your head in quite nicely! Headphones required... All in all, I'd call this my #1 CD purchase of 1994! bella :)

mouse on mars - "iaora tahiti" american/too pure 9 43056 i've been grumpy lately because i feel like it's a "dry spell" for good new music. fortunately, i've been saved by Mouse On Mars. their newest LP "iaora tahiti" has lots of good qualities: weird noises, catchy melodies, cheesy melodies and a very surreal sense of humor. for some reason the happy melodies of mike paradinas and richard james irritate me, but i find mouse on mars to do the trick. for instance, there's "kanu" - it has a happy boppin' kinda plinked tune with waves of roiling distortion and feedback hanging behind it, like a wave just before it crashes. then there's "bib", MoM's answer to jungle. the beginning of it reminds me of surf music, with the sort of clunky drumming of the era - then the choir comes in with this weird "la la la" tune and the jungle beat starts cranking around it. more waves of distortion/feedback float in and out. the whole thing is surprisingly catchy. one of the things i really like about mouse on mars is what i can only describe as their "vagueness." melodies are more often *suggested* by noises that seem to float in at the threshold of your hearing, or a few notes of a tune are played by one sound, then there's a gap, and another sound finishes a phrase. your brain fills in the gap. they put the weird "extra" noises up front and hide the meat of the track in the back. very cool technique, and one that rewards close listening. thumbs up. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/People/jsd

Yeah, I find myself quite fond of "saturday night worldcup fieber", which sounds something like the little dolls from "It's A Small World" might do, given synthesizers and a few micrograms.

Yep, I think this might be the closest you'll come to a "signature" Too Pure Records sound -- Stereolab and Laika do the same sort of thing. I love this label because their output sidesteps the genre blinders that seem to hamstring so many others. on now: _iaora tahiti_ -- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@conch.aa.msen.com born freeke Dave Walker

Did anyone see mouse on mars at baird college thursday? The show was great only about 150-200 people showed up. it was like having mom play in your living room with a more than perfect sound system. I dont think the promoters told anyone about this show. We were from out of town and it was like crashing someones high school reunion, only with mouse on mars as the house band. Supposedly a domestic CD release is forthcoming, tentatively scheduled for January 22, 2002 (according to thrilljockey.com)... the vinyl is a limited version (at least the version that includes the 7") that came out a few weeks ago.
quoted 4 lines It's the new single. The vinyl version is a 4-track EP with a bonus>It's the new single. The vinyl version is a 4-track EP with a bonus >7" with two live tracks. The CD has the 4 tracks from the EP, 1 track >from the 7" and two bonus tracks. So to get all the tracks you have >to buy it on both formats...very frustrating.

As an opening act, Mouse on Mars blew headliners Tortoise clean off the stage the last time I saw both bands in Houston.
