I just got a great new mix tape that is full of IDM. The big surprise is that it's Mark E. Quark's (out of san diego) mix tape. I've always thought of him as a "progressive house" dj, but after listening to the second side of his new tape "Unfinished Symphony", I'm completely blown away. We're talking 5 minute long triple turntable mindbending mixing madness (whew, try saying that in one breath). Very minimal, and the music is very "liquid". Throughout a lot of the mixes he will have three songs going at the same time, and the beat is more implied. There's not really a hard driving 4 on the floor beat ever. He does some incredible mixes, and they are so precise that it's as if he's composing his own music as he spins. I have to say, just listening to this tape puts me in a different state of mind. Congrats to Mark, he's changed his style quite a bit lately and I say definitely for the better. If you have a chance to check him out live, go for it. He is definitely the shit, and I'll always support djs like him that are into putting the underground back into the underground.

Mark E. Quark has always been one of the best DJs in Southern California. He made a name for himself by spinning the amazing sunrise set at the first "Narnia" party 2 years ago and ever since then he has had a difficult time shaking the ambient/trance/IDM pigeon hole that he got put into, but he does play that style so well. It's surprising that you think of him as a house DJ. Tho I've heard him spin house, Mark along with a handful of others like Eli Star are some of the few DJs in SoCal that have been playing IDMish music for a while. if you make it out to california, you can catch him almost every weekend spinning in San Diego. A promoter here in Houston is flying Mark over for a rave here on June 11. So, I'll be checkin' and supportin'!! Some of my DJ friends refuse to go to the party/rave because they despise house, but I'm now going to forward this email to them!! Thanks Luke! :) -djkc

From one DJ to another, I'd have to add that I think Mark is one of the best DJs on the West Coast. I can't quite understand why he isn't more famous than he is, other than the fact that he lives in San Diego and not, say, L.A. or San Francisco. As for the not going to see him because you don't like "house" music.... Tell your friends to lighten up. Besides, Mark would probably get offended if you pigeonholed him into one category or another. I've know him since the early days and we've both gone through many different styles of music from house to techno to progressive house to trance to whatever is considered "intelligent dance music" is called these days. What's in a name anyways. We never did give a damn about labels that other people put on music--we just play whatever music we like, regardless of it's genre. If it's good, he'll play it. I know I'll start a massive flame war with such value-laden statements, but hey, what the hell--I like to argue. =) But I digress. Go check Mark out if you get a chance. I think you'll be surprised on what a "small-town" DJ can do. Lee
