I just got a great new mix tape that is full of IDM. The big surprise is that it's Mark E. Quark's (out of san diego) mix tape. I've always thought of him as a "progressive house" dj, but after listening to the second side of his new tape "Unfinished Symphony", I'm completely blown away. We're talking 5 minute long triple turntable mindbending mixing madness (whew, try saying that in one breath). Very minimal, and the music is very "liquid". Throughout a lot of the mixes he will have three songs going at the same time, and the beat is more implied. There's not really a hard driving 4 on the floor beat ever. He does some incredible mixes, and they are so precise that it's as if he's composing his own music as he spins. I have to say, just listening to this tape puts me in a different state of mind. Congrats to Mark, he's changed his style quite a bit lately and I say definitely for the better. If you have a chance to check him out live, go for it. He is definitely the shit, and I'll always support djs like him that are into putting the underground back into the underground.
