I've heard good acid junkies stuff, but this definitely wasn't part of it. Oh damn, I just realized I violated my own rule, which was never post a negative review to IDM since they are a lot less helpful then positive reviews. Okay, um... The Orbital Peel Sessions truely are astounding. Get them, even though the tracks will come out on Diversions in a while. I had the stereo at Wired cranked with this, and now the editor wants to do a story on them :) } 3-Finally. . .There's a bloke from America that I've dubbed } the Richard James of House. . . I wish I could find his "Acid Crash" on CD somewhere, that song is mindblowing. Too bad only his wailing diva-esque stuff ever got popular. Brian

A note to those who want something that can make 303 style bass but cant afford these now overpriced machines, there are now 303 clones. The Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9 is a 303 clone + midi + a few more controls and Synthology Clone 3 which is a 303 clone + midi + ?. The march 94 issue of Future Musician reviews the Deep Bass 9 on their CD. Also, related to IDM is an article on Thomas Dolby who speaks of Richard James and give his toughts on the phenomenon. Another alternative to the modules i referred to is the FatMan as featured in the march 94 issue of Electronic Musician. It is a DIY article to build an analog bass synth. It has 18 real time controls (like the 6 controls on the 303) and is midi or cv gate controlable. Plus it has 2 oscillators (1 on the 303) with a control for the mix ratio. I am currently building it and will follow up on my results. (and i'll put my board design on techno.stanford.edu cause i dont like their design). Price? 149$ for the kit from PAiA, or well under 100$ if you program the EPROM yourself. This sounds well cool. I hope that I can pick up that magazine in the UK. I have already built some analogue synth stuff myself, ages ago. It was published in the early 80s in an english mag called ETI. Synth was called the 'Digisound 80'. It is a modular design and so very flexible. The trouble is that the dedicated controller (6502 based) is outdated, unreliable, and difficult to use. When i get round to it, I shall change the inbuilt DACs from parallel -> cv to midi -> cv. Personally, I reckon that this synth would be much more useful than a straight 303. There are so many differnt ways that you can patch it toghether. I can see the appeal of 303s though, they seem to instantly produce headfuck acid mayhem and they're portable. Is the article you mention basically intended as a 303 substitute. I guess it must be; it seemms odd to produce an analogue design now otherwise. Shall try to get mag, and let you know what I think. By the way, tjhe digisound synth used Curtis Electromusic chips throughout. These are marvellous little beasts. .... but I don't know if they still make them. (they were used in the Sequential Circuits designs.) Are these in that design? Cheers, Chris

I dont think i've ever heard of this one... I got into computers and electronics as a kid by building Heathkit (Zenith/Heath) kits and of course from the cookbooks that were sold at radio shack...

The article doesn't even mention 303 anywhere. It kind of supercedes the 303 with it's features. It's about as complete as a monosynth can be (except it doesn't have patch memory or a sequencer, but i have a computer based sequencer).

Why is it odd? It's very easy to do. When you deal with RAM, DACs, MUX, DMUX, etc... it get's a bit complicated for the average DIYer. In any case, i'm not looking for a 303 substitute since my MKS7 can replicate it in part, but for a good killer bassline machine.

I know, i have an SCI Six-trak...

Nah. If you want some, there are some shops that have stocked up on them.

No. The 2 oscillators are 555+opamps+transistors with a portamento circuit and waveshaping (for good bass, you want sawtooth, not square wave). You can offset one VCO from the other and vary the mix level, the pitch (plus pitch bending) and portamento level. The VCF is a LM13600 quad op amp with ASR enveloppe control plus pitch control, cutoff frequency, resonance and even velocity response (dynamic sensitivity). The VCA is again various opamps including an LM13600 with ADSR enveloppe control, velocity response and a punch circuit. To put in their words: retro design with modern components (it is not self tuning btw).
