Recently i have been intrested in the ongoing discussion about the lack of feeling and emotion in idm. We have seen many posts discussing philosophically why certain music moves us and other music does not. Darshan and I both agreed the the infinite beauty of the song "Belfast" by Orbital, or according to Kathleen "Stella" by Jam and Spoon, embodies the emotion and feeling that we wish to experience with each listen. My question to all idm'rs is "What moves you?" "What specific song is in your opinion the essence of all that is positive and wonderful about idm?" I think reading a list of our "dream team" would be wonderful %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Peace, Guido For all your R&D needs... travalen@kcmetro.cc.mo.us ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~home of The Private Conspiracy (Shhhh!)~ ~ ~ ~ ~~ %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%the Deep Thought Council%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

A few things off the top of my head that move me are Autechre's '444', AA's 'Mountain Goat', Aphex Twin's 'XTAL', Frank De Wulf's mix of The Orb's 'Blue Room', etc.. There are a few others; I like Jam & Spoon's 'Stella' a lot, and 'Camargue' by CJ Bolland is really nice too (although it's really basic - I think those opening chords are really great). I dunno - all those songs definitely capture a mood and make me feel, but nothing has succeeded in really making me crazy. I suppose another thing to consider is that the listening experience with respect to emotion is very circumstantial - it's not only the music that affects the way the listener feels while listening - I often find that I attach particular feelings and/or memories to certain songs which make listening to them that much more powerful. I suppose that a good song will naturally act as a medium for the transfer of feelings/memories back and forth from the listener. I suppose a good song will also act as a medium for the transfer and communication of feelings from the artist to the listener as well. I don't really have many ideas on how the two modes of communi- cation interact while listening (the listener's own emotional attachments vs. the artist's communication) but the results are potentially beautiful. Darshan All this talk makes me want to leave school and go make music.. Damn..

Well, this will sound a bit braggy/snobbish, but the track that moves me is #1 off of Aphex Twin:Selected Ambient Works 2. Cutup vocals, lulling chords, and piano+delay a la "On." This also qualifies as that which is the essence of all that is positive and wonderful about IDM. Peace, Matt <(hcy)>
