my sentiments exactly. amorph androg is a 40 minute long exercise in cool sounds but not music IMHO. For me, it's just like a glorified "sounds of nature" cd. given my postings on the aphex twin and amorph androg, many people may be wondering what i'm even doing on the idm list. well, because i still believe that the D in IDM is very important. too much 'idm' is actually 'im' now and since my love of techno and electronic music was originally born out of a love of dancing, i just can't deal with all that 'im' stuff. c'mon everyone, let's put the D back in IDM! ___ (:)====/__/\=(:)(:)============================(:)====================(:) |\| _\_ \ \|\||=| Tai Nguyen |\| email address: |=| |=| /__/\_\ \=||\| Cornell University |=| thn1@cornell.edu |\| |\| / /\ __/\|(:)============================(:)====================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "These are not my figures I'm quoting. Fair enough.... You've gotta hear "Cascade", though.

Now wait a second. Since when are sounds not music? (see Cage, John)

And what are your specific requirements for "D"? IMO, the "I" in IDM means that the music and listener are not slaved to the beat; it allows for musical experimentation and requires an open mind for the dancer. I myself am looking forward to drumless dance tracks, and it looks like Autocreation (a.k.a. Sine Bubble) is coming pretty darn close to that. I think there's lots of ambient music that's plenty danceable even if it is 90 bpm (The Orb, Banco de Gaia, heck...Enigma). I never hear Aphex Twin on the dancefloor, but I danced harder at his show than I ever have in my life. And it wasn't just because I liked him to begin with. And no, I don't dance to Brian Eno. :) --Seofon

It may have been because I had a different mental picture of what it would sound like. Not on the subject of Cascade, but on the general point you make.... I'm aware that I find it very easy to start with a preconceived idea of what an album or EP is going to be like (based on the artists previous work) and fail to appreciate it for that reason. Often, I'll buy something, and be disappointed, and not listen to it for several months. Then I'll hear a brilliant track at a party or on the radio, and I'll discover that they're one and the same.... Cosmic

Sounds can definitely be music, but all those "sounds of nature" $1.99 cds are crap...

^^^^^^^ I think there are definitely elements which make music more 'danceable', whether the music is techno, house, freestyle, or disco. For one thing, I prefer my dance tracks between 130-140 bpm, a little less to chill out and a little more when I'm pumped. My body and dancing style is most suited to this speed. As for drumless dance tracks, while this may receive acceptance with some people, I don't think it will really ever be considered dance music. Like I said before, dance music has changed immensely over the decades, but I think there are definitely objective criteria for what is danceable which will never change. Oh and one more thing...I am _always_ enslaved to the beat when I dance and I wouldn't want it any other way... =). Oh and even one _more_ thing. I think The Orb "Towers of Dub" is a GREAT dance track. (see above) peace out ___ (:)====/__/\=(:)(:)============================(:)====================(:) |\| _\_ \ \|\||=| Tai Nguyen |\| email address: |=| |=| /__/\_\ \=||\| Cornell University |=| thn1@cornell.edu |\| |\| / /\ __/\|(:)============================(:)====================(:) |=|/ / /\ \ |=||=| "These are not my figures I'm quoting. I was happily dancing throughout the Orb show last fall. It doesn't have to be drumless, either, just give us a break from 4/4. We can dance to 5/4, 7/4, 11/4 or whatever else!
