Is this the same voice that says "Welcome to Central Industrial - We are the future" on 'Accelerator'? C. -- (chris.hilker) cspot@cats.ucsc.edu "We feel affinities not only with the past, but also with the futures that didn't materialise, and with the other variations of the present that we suspect run parallel to the one we have agreed to live in." -Brian Eno

Future Sound Of London were on MTV Europe earlier today. Unbelievably cool, of course. The short film seemed inspired by KLF's "Waiting" and had Gary and Brian walking around in the woods with microphones, taping sounds. Brian had a walking-stick that he pointed at the camera while he uttered facts about life and the universe now and then. Both the audio and the visuals were run through filters to make the whole thing look very surrealistic. Text information about FSOL and Amorphous Adrogynous rolled over the screen in short intervals. They also had the characteristic woman voice talking in the beginning that they always use in their radio shows ("this is a broadcast from The Future Sound Of London"). The music was "Cascade" + a song called "Vit" that I hadn't heard before. The whole thing will be repeated tonight at 11.30CET, so you Europeans who missed it, tune in! - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

Anyone on that side of the pond have an MPEG or QuickTime converter? Digitize it and I'll give it a temporary home so those of us who have to deal with Headbangers' Ball on MTV on Saturday nights can watch it :) Brian

Here are some Garry Cobain (FSOL) quotes from the MTV feature: "We are not into technology. We are the new way, little brother." "Our music is full of realism. It is music to re-evaluate your own space here and now. It is our belief that the world is a pretty strange place." "Excellent bird environment." (looking up into the trees) "Listen. I never knew that fish could be that noisy." "Life is becoming less about the physical and more about the physiological. Music is becoming more cerebral and less about celebrities. Is it the death of the celebrity?" (holds his walking-stick like a rifle and pretends to fire it straight into the camera) "We think so." - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

I thought it was quite enjoyable actually. Since 'ambient house' owes so much to Brian Eno I've always missed a band who were thinking and acting a bit like him, i.e. taking themselves seriously. I remember the first time I saw an interview with Dr Alex, I was very disappointed. I had expected an intellectual, philosophical person but he appeared like a stoned giggling idiot who just happened to have pushed the right buttons in the studio. The Orb are just in it for a laugh. They're just clowns trying to be a bit spectacular. Even though FSOL probably are quite tongue-in-cheek I like their image. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

No, a different one. To me it sounds like a heavily treated male voice, but I'm willing to be told otherwise. I believe the Central Industrial one is a sample from a film - I've heard bits of it elsewhere. -- Stephen Hebditch TQM Communications steveh@orbital.demon.co.uk

It's definitely female. Try sample it and play it a bit faster. Probably Garry's girlfriend or someone... - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se
