It was definitely beat heavy and danceable. The lights were all off and there were no visual displays at all. It was pretty much just a dark room with an onslaught of beats and sounds shooting from every wall. There were portions that were pretty straight 4/4 bob your head kind of stuff, and there was also other stuff that was more off beat, but the thing that amazed me was how they blended it all together, I think you'd be hard pressed to figure out where one song ended and the next began. SF Saturday night. I had heard about the "no light" performances of the past and wasn't expecting or hoping for it. Yet, there it was. I must say, it worked wonderfully. I was a little bored at first standing near the back away from the speakers and in the light of the bar, so I tried a better spot. I must recommend standing in the dark in the midst of the crowd and square to the speakers. Strangely, there was copious personal space in the front, more than I'm used to (can't say for sure if it will be/was like this at other shows). The set seemed like a wide sample from most of thier later releases. I picked up on a few themes from quaristice tracks but nothing straight from the record. The beginning of the set featured a slower-paced heavy beat and bass (earthquake simulator) selection and the tempo varied widely and often. Mid-late set was full blown noisiness with the stumbling rhythms that we all fell in love with. After 30 minutes of visual sensory deprivation and frantic grasping for the rhythm, the brain gives up and the crowd started to look like a zombie flick on mute. I like to call it the "slouch" dance for lack of a better term; head-hanging swagger with the occasional violent flailing (plus that one couple who weirdly find it appropriate to booty-grind) indicating that everyone is quite lost in the soundwaves. I took along a friend from Isreal who was a stranger to Autechre but not to electronic music. Afterward he seemed shaken and described it as "amazing.. evil" and "an intense experience I will never forget." I don't know if hearing a recording will do it any justice, but if someone does have it, post it somewhere. Final opinion: go if you have never been. They still sound fresh to me, however, it won't be like the "good old days" of Autechre.

The SF show was a monster. They jumped right into it after Rob Hall stepped down (FINALLY) after the lights went off. Massive beats, delicious bass and amazing layers upon layers of sounds and tones. Melodies and synths were bestrewn in the mix but the surprising aspect of it all was just how amazingly rhythmic and danceable the whole set was. Their use of bass lines and tone has really improved over the last 5 years. Very nuanced and quite stunning how well blended the transitions from track to track, movement to movement were. Last I saw them was at Coachella in 99 and while this set was shorter and less varied musically, it was far far superior. I am really dying to get a copy of either the SF set or at least one of the shows recorded from the board. The bass was to die for (there was one part about 15 mins in where everything was cut out except a wall of bass tone that rumbled the bowels of everyone in the room). I really hope this style is indicative of their upcoming studio output. They really are having a revival of some fashion. Best album and live show in years. Fucking ace. -Mark Anatomist wrote:

A friend of mine, who had never seen them live (and had only heard Cichlisuite and Incanabula, I think) reports that the SF show was "less like music and more like a religious experience," and "like a gigantic wall of sound meticulously controlled to semi-exact ends." Hello Chicago-area idm friends- For the April Edition of our JACKSON monthly series, we're very excited to have as our headlining guests two pillars of the FOUNDSOUND records imprint, MISKATE + SOMEONE ELSE -- who are both in the middle of a lengthy world wide tour. Since its inception in Philadelphia in 2004, FOUNDSOUND and the UNFOUNDSOUND sublabel have stood out amongst the veritable hodgepodge of minimal techno labels that have sprouted out over the past couple years. A proponent of quirky, dancefloor friendly tracks constructed mainly from fragmented samples, organic minimalism, and random field recordings, we are proud to feature two of the minds and featured talents behind the highly touted imprints for JACKSON #3. Please join us for another memorable night. ENOTS and HERNAN take on opening duties for the evening in what will undoubtedly be a raucous tag team session of dancefloor gems. Get in early, cuz you know the fire's gonna start as soon as the needle touches the record @ 9! We look forward to seeing all of you on Friday! peace, -Ray // ApSerp == == Fri.APRIL.11.2008 - CHICAGO Meiotic, Approaching Serpents and Lava present... JACKSON #3: FOUNDSOUND LABEL NIGHT

A dj and co-organizer of both the Pitchspork monthly (hosting luminaries Magda, Matthew Dear, Sammy Dee, etc) and the Foundsound record label, her production debut in 2004 ("Rip it Cookie Muenster" - foundsound01) led to re-leases on Foundsound, Karloff, Microcosm, and Einmaleins. Now living in Europe, Kate has played clubs + festivals worldwide. She's played all over North America as well (MOVEMENT-Detroit, MUTEK-Montreal), and her penchant for a rocking live performance will definitely be right at home here in Chicago. == SOMEONE ELSE http://www.myspace.com/47584071 http://www.foundsoundrecords.com Sean O'Neal is SOMEONE ELSE, co-founder of the Foundsound + Unfoundsound, Tuning Spork, and Fuzzy Box record labels. SOMEONE ELSE has a pretty lengthy history at this point with relation to his involvement in electronic music (You can read the full bio HERE) but he's played for us before, killing it when we brought him to town for his Chicago debut to play alongside Green Velvet at the YFL one year anniversary back in February of 2006. Since then, he's relocated to Europe, released more records, and not unlike Miskate, has been on a performance tear of his own, rocking clubs and festivals worldwide. He also kindly took time out of his schedule in 2007 to wow the festival crowds at MOVEMENT(Detroit) and MUTEK(Montreal). So yea... we're pretty giddy at having him in this time around as well. == == UPCOMING Meiotic/ApSerp-sponsored Chicago events...
