So how come no-one's been banging on about how cool'n'groovy / boring-old-farty, enrapturing / snooze-inducing, fresh'n'wild / same-old-same-old 'Trans Canada Highway' is? Could this be a sign of an IDM cultural climate change, indicating that IDM-peeps are no longer hanging on their every note or enigmatic squiggle to impute strange significances? I mean... what's the point of subscribing to this list if a guy can't get a mailbox full of people inchoately slavering over/whining about the latest emissions of their idols? Tsk. Call yourself an IDM-list - IDM SchmyDM... OK, you need someone to start the ball rolling, is that it? Right. 6 tracks: 1 you know, 'Dayvan Cowboy', as per the album (did you check that video? Yeah, video of guys surfing. Cool. If you like surfing, that is. If you don't. Not so cool. Last track is a remix by Odd Nosdam of the aforementioned track - a 9 minute oddyssey (geddit?) that traipses distractedly between some sort of smack-ambient noodle and hypno-drone-hop semi-propulsion with gaps in between, like he got bored and went off to make a cuppa and left the record button on (he did? aah.. *cool*). All very um... *odd*... In between there are '4 new tracks' none of which sound that new, but they're all OK. Bit like the album, really. You probably heard 'Skyliner' at bleep.com and it got you mildly aroused if not entirely creamed. Will that do to kick us off? OK, I know it's not Lester Bangs or Ian Penman or Kodwo Eshun, but hey... you got no excuse now. And don't give me that coy sh|t about release dates. You've got an internet connection haven't you... don't pretend you haven't already downloaded the whole thing P2P and proudly burnt it for all your mates. it was ok on first listen - ill probably get the cd because somehow that always makes it more of an item instead of a bunch of tracks. im sure itll grow on me, but lately it seems i like my stuff more than boc - which might be a very good thing! Right, I'm not gonna waste my time or yours talking about this for long - IMO they reached their "peak" on MHTRTC, then simply plastered (needlessly) over the cracks on Geo, and the new stuff sounds like they've hired somebody off of this list, who has a copy of Absynth under one arm and an ounce of blow under the other, to do it all for 'em. Not there's anything terribly "wrong" with the music, or that it's not a rewarding listen for somebody, somewhere, but haven't the vast majority of us heard it all before ? Even the embarassingly Eurovisiony tracks off of that new Knife album are more engaging a listen ! It's like gorging on too much candy - at first ye can't get enough of it, until finally yer really, really sick of it. So then you start turning to harder, more (un)savoury stuff. Like Tod Dockstader's Aerial series, warped and (sometimes) terrifying late night headphone listening. Or Akira Rabelais' Spellewaurneysherde (or whatever it's called) ; music that has the contrary effect of not putting you to sleep, but of keeping you awake - rivetted, transfixed, spellbound. Something Boardsa haven't really done in a while I fear... Granted, neither of the above releases has nary a "beat" between them, and apologies if my post/argument is considered OT (I must confess that I haven't even heard this new BoC EP yet), but hasn't this whole crafted rhythmic electronic listening music with roots in hip hop 'n electro thing been kinda done to death at this stage ? Even the administrators of this here forum/listy thing have moved on twould appear ??? |---------+------------------------------> | | Alan Lockett | | | <Alan.R.Lockett@bri| | | stol.ac.uk> | | | | | | 10/05/2006 15:25 | | | | |---------+------------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: idm@hyperreal.org | | cc: | | Subject: [idm] BoC - new EP | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| So how come no-one's been banging on about how cool'n'groovy / boring-old-farty, enrapturing / snooze-inducing, fresh'n'wild / same-old-same-old 'Trans Canada Highway' is? Blimey if you didn't catch me ignoring this new record! If you don't listen to it, it sounds great! If One doesn't buy it, One may buy something else! Blindly, even! Ach, they all fall down in the end, don't they? - Eno oinging Paul Simon, Aphids Twin(k), Broads of Canasta, etc.. Rather messy and embarrassing. I'd rather look away than watch the final bounce, splat. Kinda makes one wonder if the products and advancements of Art, like Science, are mostly due to the randomness of accidents, lack of sleep, drugs/poisoning, and/or mental illness...(Not that I'm saying that musicians who 'fall down' have been or are taking drugs, mentally ill or anything other than 100% normal and healthy, even if they usually aren't; I'm not saying that, nor am I saying that after an artist's early accidents and/or experiments, they are less and less likely to produce anything interesting.) If you don't agree, take all of yours and your family's money down to your local casino and try winning at Roulette - it's the same - you might hit it, buy mostly you won't. But don't feel bad, a lot of people with no talent and no inspiration never even get to play! I'm not saying that Beards of Costanza are not talented, even though that might agree with current sentiments among those who 'call the shots'. I'm just saying that maybe someone else needs to step up and figure out the next new money-loosening noise. It could even be me (in disguise) - or you! -- Alan Lockett <Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk> wrote: So how come no-one's been banging on about how cool'n'groovy / boring-old-farty, enrapturing / snooze-inducing, fresh'n'wild / same-old-same-old 'Trans Canada Highway' is? OK, I'll bite. I guess it's stating the obvious to point out that it bears more than a passing resemblance (esp. 'My Eye'). Any relation? Who was that Lone man? 'November dream tape' almost sounds like a parody of one of their titles. So now we get artists knowingly recontextualising artists of the 90s/00s, who are knowingly recontextualising the sounds of the 60s/70s etc etc How post-post-modern do we want to get before we implode? When I feel it getting too 'meta', I like to peel back a few layers and deal with the references - i.e., go retro for a few spins. And after all, the layers were being stacked way before any of us were born; I think it's just the compression and speed of them these days that amounts to the sameness we find tedious. It's a bit hard when it comes to an artist that seems to jump the line between 'style' and 'disappearing up one's own arse' to a set of listeners. In that case, it just doesn't help to skip back to, say, the first three Roxy Music records. The former will still sound stale when you come back. Funny how those 3 Roxys always sound vital every time I return, though (after the third, Ferry seems to fall prey to his legacy). None of this should be taken as commentary on BoC in particular; I haven't downloaded it. :-) jeff np : Roxy Music: For Your Pleasure (title track, resplendant with Enossified piano) -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Alan Lockett <Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk>

The Bogus Man: I love it - because it is long and meandering, like medium-paced chase. I like where it goes and how it plods, even 35 years on (Lord, I'm old). "Grey Lagoons", placed immediately after it is the accelerated antidote. BTW, the whole series was remastered a few years ago and that first record has been cleaned up considerably. The reason I include "Stranded" in that list is because it represents Roxy as "Ferrymusic" (as he coined it) in what I consider to be a high watermark. After that, imo, it was imitation of the trophy. I also agree that Roxy was far more interesting with Eno's destabilization at work in the mix - alien interference was woefully lacking when he left after one of Ferry's tantrums over the shape of RM. Roxy was magic at their height - I got to see some of that early stuff live and it was even more jawdropping. I guess you had to be there, but they changed everything. jeff -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Alan Lockett <Alan.R.Lockett@bristol.ac.uk>

I think Alan's onto something (or perhaps he's 'on' something, anyway) (And some have observed the cannibalistic overtones of some of his other statements: "OK, I'll bite," etc.) Yikes! Watch that man! (Seeing cannibalism in your dream, symbolizes a destructive and forbidden desire or obsession. In a literal sense, cannibals consume people's lives, along with their energy. This dream may then denote an aspect of your life (career, relationship, children...) which is consistently draining your enthusiasm and vitality. Dreaming that you are a victim of cannibalism means that you feel that you are being "eating alive" by work, a relationship. or a situation in your waking life. {Dreaming that you are a cannibal on the other hand, is obviously the opposite or inverse of that.}) He suggested: AUTOPHAGY Definition: \Au*toph"a*gy\, n. [Gr. ? self + ? to eat.] (Med.) The feeding of the body upon itself, as in fasting; nutrition by consumption of one's own tissues. To which we can append as an hypothetical explanation of symptoms (in a figurative sense): ECHOLALIA Pronunciation:`ekow'leylee-uh Definition: [n] (psychiatry) mechanical and meaningless repetition of the words of another person (as in schizophrenia) EPANODOS Pronunciation: i'panu`d?s Definition: [n] repetition or recapitulation in reverse order -- O more exceeding love, or law more just? Just law, indeed, but more exceeding love! --Milton. EPISTROPHE Pronunciation: i'pistrufee Definition: [n] repetition of the ends of two or more successive sentences, verses, etc. A figure in which successive clauses end with the same word or affirmation; e. g., ``Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I.'' --2 Cor. xi. 22. Does it help understand Lone or BOC - or why you might like these? Is our culture autistic? Unable to flow, only able to feedback?
